Skip a good breakfast,
Catch the last taxi to work
Recite my memory verse
To help me get through
Check the cell phone inbox
Sit still for a moment
Panic is on the way
I forgot my hairspray
And can’t turn back now
I feel like an absolute wreck
As we enter the parking complex
Stumble onto the curb
Thank the cabbie
Fumble for my change
I can’t even calculate the tip
Grabbing my portfolio
Twisting a new watch
I rush to the building
I know I am late
Smile at the doorman
Chat with the receptionist
See if I can swallow my fear
Dragging my feet
My mind in tow,
Make a beeline for my empty desk
Settling into the cubicle
Nobody seems to have noticed
Maybe I was only dreaming
And I made it on time today
Just in time for work
I look around
The messy space
Piles of paperwork abound
I almost missed it
Could have overlooked it
Glad I didn’t somehow
Half-empty, all alone
Sitting in the paper tray
Blank sheet of paper,
Staring at me
Looks as if it’s lost the way
I pick it up and turn it over
It to the trash for sure
No other use for it until that I hear That voice that calls my name
The words stream out
Raining over me
I feel like a garden statue
If only I had the same strong vines
To hold my head up still
And stay nothing, listening only
The lecture is over
The voice moves on
Heading for the next latecomer
Heralding nothing
But dismal news
And the truth that I may be fired
Crumple the paper
My day’s just begun
The hours are sheer torture
The minutes unbearable
Seconds too painful to count
Crumple the paper
First hour is gone
Wish I could remember
The verse I said aloud
Maybe I would have helped
To lift up what's left of me
Crumple the paper
I’m still stuck at work
Lunchtime is forever from now
I scold myself
For skipping the morning meal
First break can’t come fast enough
There’s an energy bar in my purse
I dare not open it
Far too noisy
I’ve had enough noise for today
Crumple the paper
Leave me alone
I’m tired of this routine
It hurts to smile
Delivering a presentation
The one they said was no good
Crumple the paper
Listen silently
Pretend I am in defeat
Go back to my desk
Unwrap the bar
I don’t care who hears anymore
Start over again
Just a few more minutes
I’ll get it this time for sure
A moment or two
I will make it right
It worked out okay anyhow
Crumple the paper,
It’s the end of the day
I’m glad I can’t remember
What filled the other hours
I just want to get home
To get away from it all
To find the peace I've lost
Crumple the paper
For the last time
Feel the strange smoothness
A rough kind of soft
The texture of my day
Life in my shoes
My daily dealings
Going by quietly
Not what it was meant to be
Slowly crumple the paper
Throw it at the waste bin
Perfect shot
I smile sadly
I’ve reached the end of my day
