“It has to be here. Where did I put it?” she mumbles. “It has to be here.”
Annie shuffles several papers from the large pile on her desk. “It’s not here. Where is that medical report?” she mumbles. “It’s in my wastebasket.”
With shaking hands, Annie grabs her wasketbasket. “I think I see it?” Paper after paper is removed. Annie grabs the last piece of paper sitting in the bottom of the wastebasket. Slowly, slowly unfolding this piece she relies that report is still missing. “Where is my report? I need that report by 5:00pm tonight or I’m in big trouble. I’ll try my file folders.” With the last folder in her hand, Annie screams, “Where is my missing report?” Her stomack in knots and a racing heart, Annie sends out an S.O.S.
Feeling lonely this morning and desparately needing some company, I check my emails. “An email from Annie? I wonder what’s up with Annie?” I read, “Are you going to Mississauga today? I am frantic…give me a call.”
With my phone in my hand I ask, “Annie, what’s up?”
“I’m frantic. My special report is missing. The doctor needs that medical report by 5:00pm tonight or I’m in trouble.”
“Annie, did you pray about this?”
“YES! I think that report is at my home. I hope it’s there. I’m in big trouble. My daughter is writing her final exam and I can’t reach her. What am I going to do?”
Without hesitation, “I will drive you home.”
“Are you sure?’
“Annie, absolutely, I will pick you up at your medical building in half and hour.”
After picking up Annie, we head for the highway. Since my friend is frantic, I try to lighten her heavy load with some humor.
“Annie, I do this all the time – losing things – especially my glasses. They can be right in front of me and I can’t see them.”
Annie laughs.
“Annie, what if your report is not at home? It probably is on your desk and the Lord blinds your eyes. He does that to me all the time.”
“Well, my friend, I guess the Lord knows that we need a break. Lunch is on me.”
An hour later, my car arrives in Annie’s driveway. “Okay, my friend, here we go.” With keys in her hand, Annie dashes for the side door. She runs down the stairs to her basement appartment. Flipping the light switch, she grabs the clear plastic file folder on the bedroom desk. The report is not there.
“I’m in trouble now, my friend. Let’s go to lunch. For whatever reason, the Lord wants us together today. Let’s go eat.”
Over lunch, I pray, “Lord you know that Annie needs that report. You also, know were it is. Please open Annie’s eyes to see that report.” After sharing our experiences about losing things and the everyday experieces of life, Annie is laughing. Her stress is gone and so is my loneliness.
After returning to my office, I receive this email from Annie; “My missing report was right under my nose all the time. Thanks.” This experience is an eye opener for me. My eyes, hands and voice towards Annie demonstate love. Annie’s invitation to lunch answers my need. I have a deeper understanding of this truth: “but God demonstrates his own love towards us.” Romans 5: 8 (NKJ)
