His wife Martha was making the beds. They were expecting guests at the week-end and her nerves were on tenterhooks, beyond anything she could cope with. Week-ends were normally quiet, uneventful with only the occasional visit from her sister Honor for Sunday Tea.
George and Martha had never bothered to get a phone until the untimely stroke that came upon him two months ago. He was very lonely and looked forward to the phone ringing, he walked towards the very heavy set ivory phone, an old fashioned type of the 1970’s, and picked it up.
“Hello George”
“Hello …. Who is this?”
“Is this George Cooper?”
“Yes it is, can I ask who is calling” He was immediately puzzled and could not place this voice at all.
“Yes, this is George Cooper …. Who is this please?”
“George, it’s your Father” Grabbing the nearest dining room chair George sat down completely in shock.
“I’m sorry sir, I think you must have the wrong George Cooper, you see I don’t have a father”.
“I know George, I know you don’t have a father, an earthly father that is, because he died before you were born”.
“W… who are you!? How do you know all this?”
“George, I know all things. I know all about your life. Even before you were born I knew you. You are sixty-nine years old and Martha is your second wife. Your first wife Sarah left you taking all of your three children”.
His head started to spin and sweat began to pour profusely, dripping down into his light grey eyes. He plunged his hand into his trouser pocket where he knew he always kept a clean cotton handkerchief and wiped his brow. It seemed as though a million thoughts and more cascaded around his mind at the speed of lightning. Who was this man!? He tried desperately again to place the voice and could not.
Composed, George finally spoke
“Who are you? How do you know all these things about my life, Is Sarah okay? What about the children?”
A sudden horrific thought crossed his mind and a prayer ascended straight to heaven ‘Oh God please don’t let anything bad happen to them”.
The voice that answered was quiet and calm.
“George I am your Father, your Father in heaven. I have come personally to deliver your prayers, even unto twenty years ago. I know how lonely you are, I know how fond you are of your second wife, and I even know how much you wait for the telephone to ring, so I thought I would ring you myself with some good news”.
George’s heart was lifted, in fact his whole being was lifted right up into the heavens, even though he was physically still sitting on the dining room chair and Martha still busy upstairs with the beds.
He was now stood surrounding the brightest light he had ever seen. Someone was seated upon a throne with emerald lights and rainbows. There was also a figure of a man stood right next to Him on the right.
His clothes were the whitest he had ever seen, and he knew as Martha was a stickler for bleach and starch on all the white linen they had in the house. Beside this man who stood in white clothing and a golden sash around his waist were three children, three young children. He recognised them and they were exactly as he remembered, to the day, Sarah left him.
“Son, I never forget your prayers, I always answer my children’s prayers but when it is time, my time. Your children are here George because Sarah had a terrible accident, where she survived, though only just. She is permanently paralyzed, but your children came home. Thank you for teaching them about My Son Jesus, even when they were so young.
At the nodding of Jesus’ head, the children ran into the arms of their earthly father. Tears of joy rang around the heavens, George even heard the angels sing.
“They are safe now you can let this burden go …. But George, forgive Sarah, her burden is very great, greater than even yours. I have forgiven her, Go! George....forgive her also”.
In the twinkling of an eye George was back in his chair, he was still holding the telephone.
“Hello”
“George?”
“Yes” he heard a female voice, a familiar voice.
“George, its Sarah”
