Since I recently turned 60, I have a new outlook. You see I finally realize, it’s all temporary anyway. Establishing roots in a place takes on new meaning now. I still believe it’s important, especially if you have children. We all need to have a sense of belonging somewhere. But when you know your true citizenship is in heaven, you can be at home almost anywhere! We are just traveling through this world on a journey that God has chosen for us. We need to make the best of it, even if it is hard. Whether you live in the same town all your life or not, it’s the same: we are all, as the old song says, just traveling through...
One of the good things to come from moving for us is that we have dear friends in each location that we have been in. This past weekend we had visitors from the Florida Panhandle that we met back in 1988 when we lived there. People are amazed when we tell them we only lived there for three years, yet we formed bonds with this family that has lasted for 28 years now, a friendship that only God could have given. You can’t buy that with silver or gold and it is worth much more.
Psalm 121:8 says the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. What a comfort to know that the One who watches over us does not sleep nor slumber, as the first part of that Psalm says. This means that as we travel this earth no matter what we face, whether we feel at home or not, we can put our head down at night and rest peacefully because He is watching over us and we can sleep while He takes care of all that we can’t.
We sang a throwback song this past Sunday at our church that starts out with these words, “As I travel through this pilgrim land there is a Friend who goes with me.” Let this be an encouragement as we go about the business (or busyness) of everyday life. He is with us, leading us safely home.
Traveling requires preparation. One day our journey here will end. Are we prepared for the last destination? Just as we have a travel guide or atlas to steer us in the right direction on our trips, there is a guide that we have to be assured of a safe landing in the end. It is called the Bible. Let us read and follow our Guide.
