But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
The sense of smell is powerful. We experience its power when we return home for the holidays. Immediately, the aroma of that turkey roasting in the oven transports me back to my childhood, going to grandma's house. Or perhaps its power is realized when we get a whiff of that after shave once worn by a father who has gone on to be with the Lord. The familiar scent may bring a tear our eye – or a smile to our face. Either way the emotional response is undeniable.
The combination of my favorite fragrance and the cosmetics I use blend to create my 'signature' scent. “This smells like you Aunt Mindi,” my nephew says as hands me the jacket I had forgotten at his house. Though I had not worn the jacket for quite a while, my lotion and after bath splash permeated the fabric. He knew it was mine because the scent brought my face to his mind.
The Bible tells us that burnt offerings were a pleasing aroma to God. But He no longer requires the burnt offerings of the Old Testament. He wants our lives to be a living sacrifice to him. Our bodies – His temple, attracts God's attention as the pleasing aroma of our lives rises to heaven. The Holy Spirit living within us should produce a sweet spirit.
To begin our steady stream of daily offerings to God, our lives must be consecrated to God. Our every thought and action set apart for His glory. Each day we should refresh ourselves with a 'splash' of His Holy spirit so that He becomes our signature fragrance. And Jesus should permeate every area of our lives.
Ephesians 5:1-2 (NLT)
5 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Is it obvious to others, in how we live our lives that we are children of God? It should be evident to those around us to whom we belong.
Heavenly Father, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, help me each day to offer my life as a living sacrifice to you. May it glorify your Holy name and be a pleasing aroma to you.
