He set alone in cold silence, mesmerized by both the beauty and yet the danger of the storm. His mind drifted back to a much better time in his life. He could remember the laughter, the peace; the heartwarming times where he used to have a song in his heart. Now, he only had faded memories of family get-togethers.
“God, is this a time in my life where You are setting me aside to teach my some things? If this is the case, why am I so miserable and lonely?”
James got up to shake away the thoughts. He stood there for a minute, and then walked back into the house. He had turned off all the lights to watch the storm. Tonight He even turned off the computer. Suddenly, the phone rang. He had grown accustomed to not answering his phone because of his mom’s repeated calls.
James heard his dad’s voice speaking over the answering machine. “Son, please, this is your dad, please pick up your phone. The tornado has hit our home. Could you come over here as soon as you can?”
James’s heart raced as He picked up the phone, “Is mom okay?”
Dad’s voice quivered as he said, “No son, she had to be rushed to the hospital.”
After talking to his dad, he knew what he had to do. He got in his truck and took off in that direction. As He got closer to the neighborhood, He saw the disaster. Some houses were ripped in half and some completely decimated. Still others were standing there like nothing had even happened.
Then he came upon the home that He had lived in as a child. His heart sank as He saw his dad with a group of neighbors gathered around the rubble.
“Dad!” shouted James, as he jumped out of truck.
“I’m here son. I just got a report from the doctor. You mom is going to be alright, she is asking for you.”
The two hurried into the truck and headed to the hospital. Once there, they inquired about her room number, slipped into the elevator, and found the room.
James let dad lead the conversation, he stood there quietly.
Finally James’s mom spoke up. “James I have something very important I want to say to you. I have not been the most supportive and understanding mother at certain times in your life. I wasn’t there when you needed me the most; but I am here for you now. I want you to know that I love you. You will always be my son. I am sorry that I pushed you away with my words.”
James answered, “I know I said I was cutting all ties with the family. But when I saw how the tornado had ripped apart the home I grew up in, I realized then, just how important you both are to me.”
Dad clearing his throat spoke humbly, “God never intended for our family to separate. But He has brought us together for such an important lesson; for He has tied our family together with cords that cannot be broken.”
Mother and son apologized that night, and their family has a fresh beginning. No matter what happens always remember we are woven and crafted by God’s awesome hand. He has put us in families, and ties us strongly together in love.
Sometimes, what seems to be for our destruction, God turns into a wonderful place of restoration. We have a new hope, a new beginning in Jesus. He can turn around a hopeless situation. He will change a person’s heart. There can be a new beginning for any relationship as long as there is love.
