Since we live in Middle Tennessee the chance of a hurricane pounding our home is pretty scarce. The challenge in building our house was to construct a place that would be secure and afford us protection, especially from tornadoes. The destructive force of the tornado that hit Nashville a few years back brought a painful realization that it could happen again. We had a strong shelter built underground as part of the basement. It has concrete block on all four walls. The back wall of the shelter is built into the ground. None of the walls are above ground. The roof of the shelter is the front porch.
Even with all our planning we knew that if a disaster of such magnitude as a tornado came with a direct hit we would have only one Hope, and it had nothing to do with the building materials used in constructing our house.
God says if we build our house on the Rock it will be better for us, than if we build it on the sand. He goes so far as to call those people who build houses on the sand foolish. (Matthew 7:24-27) God is using this parable to help us see that Jesus should be the Rock we are building upon every day.
It is sad to see so many foolish people build their lives on the sand. Sandy things are things that can fall when the stormy pressures of life come. Things like friends or careers, worldly ambitions or those pleasurable things we find so enjoyable. Our hope shouldn’t be in things of this world.
When we build on the Rock we will put Jesus first in our lives. We will find time to read His Word daily and put what we read into practice. If Jesus is the Lord of our lives then we have a responsibility to respond to His Word with obedience.
Many times we hear Christian men and women pay “lip service” to God, but their daily decisions and their lifestyle don’t add up to the beneficial life God wants for them. This lesson learned from the Word of God is for our own protection and safety. It was put there for our benefit and our blessing. We have the freedom to choose. The consequences can be devastating when we choose to build on the sand.
Both sunshine and rain have their place in our lives. They benefit us and help us grow in the Lord. When the storms of life come we will withstand them better because we have built our lives on the Rock.
