She sat in a wheel-chair by the window in the living room. Her lack-
luster eyes looked out on a snow covered winter morning. Her silvery
white hair and pale complexion and the white robe she wore, blended
with the landscape outside. Everything was still – not a whisper of
wind, not a beep from a bird.
She remembered past winters – the sound of the crackling of wood in
the fireplace, the patter of little feet running around, squeals of
laughter, screams of anger, a dog barking, melodious music from the
radio – a red cardinal pecking at the birdfeeder, bright red poinsettias
blooming on the windowsill, a bowl of apples and oranges on the dining
table – a world of sound and sight. Where have they all disappeared?
Unchecked tears rolled down her cheeks.
She wheeled her chair to the bedside stand and took out her Bible. She
opened it and randomly turned the pages. She started to read from the
Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter .12: (The Message Bible)
“Before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are
darkened (sight is impaired), and the clouds (of depression)
return after the rain (of tears);
In the day when the keepers of the house (the hands and the
arms) tremble, and the strong men (the feet and the knees)
bow themselves, and the grinders (the molar teeth) cease
because they are few, and those who look out of the windows (the eyes) are darkened;
when the doors (lips) are shut, and the sound of the grinding of
(teeth) is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird and the
crowing of a cock, and all the daughters of music (the voice and
the ear) are brought low;
also when (the old) are afraid of danger from that which is high,
and fears are in the way, and almond tree (their white hair)
blooms, and the grasshopper (a little thing) is a burden, and
desire and appetite fail,……….
Before the silver cord (of life) is snapped apart, or the golden
bowl (the heart) is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the
fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern (and the whole
circulatory system of the blood ceases to function,…..)”
“What a vivid picture of myself,” she thought, as she flipped through the
pages again. And then she found another passage. It was from
Psalms.46.
“God is our refuge and strength—a very present and well
proved help in trouble—Therefore we will not fear though the
earth should change—God is in the midst of her, she shall not
be moved-
Be still and know that I am God.”
And then it happened – bright sunlight came creeping over the sky. Its
warmth melted the snow into myriads of tiny droplets of water. As the
sunlight caught them at the precise angle they split it into vibrant colors
of the spectrum.
Suddenly the bleak snow covered morning was transported into the splendor of heaven.
The sky became a majestic, magnificent and gigantic bill board,
proclaiming the glory of God and His promise for joy and peace.
As the shadows of her depression faded in this marvelous light, she
remembered a hymn from her younger days:
“Sun of my soul, Thou Savior dear,
It is not dark if thou be near
O may no earth born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant’s eyes.”
