The North- western part of India, from the foothills of the Himalayas right along the Ganges River down to the Bay of Bengal, is covered mostly by dense jungle. Nearly seventy years ago tigers roamed this area freely and in some places they numbered one to every twenty men. Hunting them was a favorite sport of the British who ruled India at that time.
Mr. Robinson was one those hunters. When he retired he settled down in Tamilnadu, where I lived. We became friends and he loved to tell me of his episodes with the tigers. His favorite was how he hunted a cunning tiger.
This particular tiger was so smart that many hunters and shikars had failed to get him.
Mr. Robinson decided that he would get him. Since none of the hunting techniques had proved effective he was at a loss to find a new strategy. One day he met an old native shikar who advised him to try and lure the tiger by imitating its mating call. This was a very hard procedure .With the old man’s help and great practice Mr. Robinson was able to master it.
Thus armed he returned to the part of the jungle where the tiger had its home. The villagers in the area reported hearing the tiger calling at night. It was the month of November, the mating season for tigers. One late afternoon, Mr. Robinson arrived at the bank of a small river. He saw a shallow depression some fifteen feet wide fringed with bushes on the riverside and open on the other. A fire track crossed the depression at right angles. Twenty yards from the track, on the open side was a small tree. Here Mr. Robinson took his stand hoping that he would get a shot at the tiger when he clears the bushes and comes down the track.
Cupping his hands upon his mouth and filling his lungs he gave the imitation of a tiger’s mating call. To his joy the tiger answered from about five hundred yards. Call answered call, tossed back and forth, the urgent summons of the king and the seductive response of his bride.
As the setting sun flooded the forest with golden light the tiger appeared. He cleared the bushes at a swift pace and walked across the track. Half-way up he turned and walked straight towards Mr. Robinson. With one paw poised he stopped and raising his head he looked with stunned surprise at this human standing where he expected his mate to be. Thus standing he exposed his chest and throat to Mr. Robinson’s fatal shot.
Just as the mating call of the tigers had echoed over the hills and valleys on that November evening modern technology has made it possible for messages to be sent over oceans and mountains circling the world. Communications, sight and sound, flash across the nations in matter of minutes. The wisdom and power behind this technology is amazing. It makes it easy now to fulfill the great commission to go out and preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. ( Matt.28:18-20)
Yet when this same power is used unwisely it can be the cause of tremendous destruction. The minds and bodies of untold innocent victims are ruined by the same Siren Call that the tiger responded to that tragic evening.
Isaiah, the prophet prince warns about the evildoers.
“Doom to you who use lies to sell evil ------Doom to you who call evil good-------
Doom to you who think you are smart------Who violate the rights of the innocent---
