“Gossip is detrimental to a company, folks. Please don’t allow yourself to become part of the rumor mill,” the boss reprimanded, closing the meeting.
“What did she say about Bill?” Mary whispered.
“She didn’t say Bill, she said the rumor mill.”
“When are we going to get a bill?” asked Jenny.
“Why are we going to get a bill? What’s it for?” asked Tom.
“Not bill, a mill.”
“What mill?” Mary asked. “There’s a mill down by the river that still grinds corn for the local farmers, is that the mill you mean?”
“Still? You guys are going to get in trouble if the police find out that you are running a still,” chided Andrea, coming into the conference room in hopes of finishing off the morning doughnuts.
“I can’t believe that about the boss and her husband. She must be devastated. They’ve been married forty-five years and have raised three children together,” chimed Luke.
“What are you guys talking about?” asked Randy.
“About the boss and her husband, Bill. She said he’s living with someone besides her. I just can’t believe it. I feel so sorry for her,” said Mary.
“No wonder she has been cranky lately,” replied Ann.
“What’s up guys?” asked Lucy, pouring a cup of coffee.
“We’re talking about the meeting this morning. You know, the one you missed because you were late!”
“Oh! So, what’s the juice? What did I miss?” asked Ann
“Well, the boss said her husband left her.”
“No way! She came right out and told you that?” said Ann.
“Yes,” said Mary. “She told us that she and her husband had split up. Seems he’s left her for another woman, the dog!”
“Men! You can’t live with them and you can’t live without them. Wonder how long he’s been cheating on her?” asked Lucy.
“I heard he left her for a bimbo half the bosses age and that they’ve
moved to California.”
“Naw! Men are scum!” quipped Lucy.
“Who’s dumb?”
“Mary, you don’t listen. No one said dumb. Lucy said men are scum!”
“Oh! Yeah, I know what you mean. Since I’ve been doing all that extra work on the computer at night, my thumbs are numb too.”
“What’s wrong with your thumbs, Mary?” asked Luke.
“They’re numb. But, at least I‘ve not got troubles like the boss, bless her heart.” replied Mary.
“What kind of troubles does she have?”
“Better not say. It would be gossiping.”
“Oh come on! Tell me more! Tell me more!” begged Luke.
“No way!” said Mary. “I’ve already told you more than I heard!”

I found a few of the misunderstandings a bit of a 'stretch'--but taken as broad farce rather that realistic conversation, it really works.
