So what would life be like if we never had to endure pain? No doubt we would all like to find out. With no pain we would never again shriek out the word, “Ow!” when we stub our toe on a pointy rock, or when we accidentally slice our finger while chopping up vegetables in the kitchen. If we were to stick our hand a little too close to the hungry flames of a raging fire, we would never know it for our body would be oblivious to the fact that it was being hurt. A little girl falls down on the sidewalk and hits her head on the hard concrete? No matter – she can’t feel the effects of the fall, so she must be fine right? What if our best friend dies of cancer or our father is taken by a heart attack? Would they feel any pain? Would we feel a hole in our heart at the loss of them? Or would we remain stoic at their demise, as if they had never existed?
What if we never felt the pricking of a guilty conscience? What if we never saw the need in our life for a Savior from our sins, Someone to take our place and cancel out all the terrible things that we’ve done? After all, with no pain there would be no sorrow over wrong. And what if a man named Jesus Christ some 2,000 years ago – had never suffered torture and death on a cross to be that Savior and pay for our sins?
God did not create us for pain, He created us for paradise. But as long as sin is present in the world, pain is inevitable. That’s why Jesus did take our place. He endured more excruciating pain then we could ever imagine so that if we accept His sacrifice and make Him Lord of our life, we will someday be completely free from all the sting and hurt that this world holds. That doesn’t mean that those who accept Him won’t have problems. Sometimes we too, will need to undergo turmoil for the Kingdom of God. But just like our Savior Jesus Who rose from the dead, we will someday ascend to Heaven where there will be no more tears and no more sorrow. Only constant joy at being with the Lord for all eternity in absolute ecstasy and the absence of all pain!
“I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.” 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 NASB
