As she looked up from her job she noticed her boss walking her way. He handed her an envelope and told her about a meeting that morning. She tore open the envelope to find a note stating, Sightseeing is prohibited, Miss Berry. Conference Room 10:00AM please. What on earth was this supposed to mean?
Mr. Grange, the president of her company, spoke as took her chair. “Miss Berry, I will get right to the point of this meeting. It has come to my attention that you have been sightseeing on the job and not pulling your own weight. As you know we need everyone to do their job on the assembly line. What can you tell me about this?”
Stunned, Berry could only look at Mr. Grange with her mouth open. “What do you mean, Mr. Grange? I thought I have been doing my job” she said slowly, frowning.
Mr. Grange smiled. He looked down at his notebook and read something. He looked up and said softly, “Miss Berry do you remember the motto our company was built on? We have it engraved in the corner of the building. Can you quote it to me?”
“Why, of course, Mr. Grange. Everybody here knows the motto you mean. For we walk by faith, not by sight. But what does that have to do with me? I just don’t get it.” Berry said perplexed. She loved the motto of this company and had proudly told her family and friends that her company was a Christian company with a motto that came right from 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV).
As she turned her head she realized that her boss, Jerry, had brought in a box. Questioningly her eyebrow raised.
“Our motto represents what we need to do to get our job done right” Mr. Grange continued gently. “I think you feel you have gotten so good at your job that you don’t need to tend to it. I want you to see something.”
He motioned for Jerry to come over. Jerry brought the box with him. She knew it was hers because of the special mark it had. As she looked in she became instantly aware that something was wrong. In the box lay small, pitted objects. She knew they were something she had missed and let go through.
With remorse she picked up one of the small objects and said, “I don’t remember this object. I must have been thinking of something else when this came through the line. Please forgive me, Mr. Grange. I understand what you are telling me. I will be much more effective if I tend to my job and make sure every one of them makes it through my machine in excellent shape.”
Smiling, Mr. Grange stood and offered his hand to Miss Berry. “Thank you for understanding Miss Berry. We need people who care about each and every object that comes through the assembly line. Without your particular job there would be more flaws than necessary in our product.”
As Berry left the room and walked back to her job she mused. Isn’t that just like being a Christian? We come to a point, for whatever reason, that we don’t think we need to tend our relationship with God or friends and family. We walk by sight instead of faith, thinking God will tend to whatever needs arise. Just because they smile at us we thing everything is going well. Lord, I will walk by faith, knowing You will help me. Help me not to sightsee and take things for granted. Help me to know walk down the path you have for me and tend those people you have in my path. Amen. She smiled as the prayer went up.
As Berry took over her job once more she looked intently as the objects came swooshing out of her machine. Each one a product that was going to be the best it could be if it was up to her. She smiled once more thanking God for His every lesson and again saying the motto to herself.
