I know what drew them up the mountain road . The Rockies in Autumn are aglow with every shade of gold and yellow that can be imagined. The deep blue, cloudless Colorado sky is the picture perfect backdrop. The air is crisp. The breeze is brisk, causing the Aspen leaves to flutter, treating admirers to a visual feast. Mule deer run freely into the roads, and along the paths. It's God's country in all it's glory.
They talked and laughed more than they had for a long time. They asked another sight seer to take their picture. Mother and daughter connected that day. Who could disagree that God is a master designer! His creation was the common ground .
Aunt Lynn hoped Candy would agree to come back to church with her. Candy, unmarried, lived with a man.in the other part of her house, a house she and Candy had bought. Aunt Lynn had thought they would respect her faith and marry. She prayed constantly for Candy's return to the fold, and for Joe,the boyfriend.
In the past she tried most of the old methods, preaching, guilt, tears, anger, and nagging. At last she told me her only method from now on will be unconditional love(The kind God has for us) and earnest prayer.
They spent an hour clicking pictures that promised to be award winning.
"Come with me to church, Sunday, Candy. I'd love for you to hear the new pastor,"she'd said.
"Candy rolled her eyes,"and said," I'll think about it Mom."
"Good, I'ts changed a lot, more contemporary, I think you'll like it."
That was as far as Aunt Lynn dared take it. She hugged Candy, and kissed her cheek.
They climbed into the van and headed down the road, and around a curve. Aunt Lynn looked up to see a car swerve, for a deer, and into their path. She screamed, Candy jerked the wheel to the right, the van skidded in the gravel and flipped over. Then it rolled again and again. Aunt Lynn was praying "Lord, please save us, I don't know if she is ready."
They couldn't open the doors. The lifesquad came with the jaws equipment. They were cut out.
Father God had heard the earnest prayer. They both walked away with only a few scratches.
I wish I could report that it was a life changing event for Candy, but there are no outward signs of it.
My Aunt prays daily with new confidence, knowing God still answers her prayers.
Her hope has been renewed.
I tell the story from time to time for two reasons:
It is an encouragement to those who have prayed for years with no answer.
And as my friends and I enter the Autumn of our lives,
May our Lord find us ready, loving unconditionally, and praying earnestly.

The crash scene sounds a little stiff to me. But I have a hard time writing intense scenes...the words just don't come to me very good.
Other than that it was good!
