“Summer vacation starts tomorrow; and I can play as long as I want! No more pencils, no more books! No more teachers, dirty looks!”
Carol laughed and sat down next to Pam on the bus. Next year they would be in the second grade; and they had been friends even before they started kindergarten together. There houses were not far apart; and they went back and forth so often, that each felt at home in either house. The school bus ride of four miles would give them plenty of time to talk and plan their summer.
“We passed! I hope we are in the same class next year. I’ll miss our teacher, Miss Steinberg. I liked her stories. Sitting on the floor Indian style was fun.” Pam was little and sat up front where she could see the pictures in the books.
“Carol, do you want to spend the night? Maybe we can have a slumber party! We can ask Cindy and Debbie, too!”
“I’ll ask my mom. I like sleeping at your house. Your sister Laurie makes me laugh when she picks up things with her toes!”
The best friends were full of energy when they got off at the bus stop on the corner, with the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. Everyone ran in different directions to get home and show their final report cards to their parents.
“Mom, I passed! Here’s my report card. I got a couple E’s for excellent, and the rest are S for satisfactory. Miss Steinberg wrote something for you on the bottom. Laurie passed. Her grades are better than mine.”
“Good! Girls, Go take off your school clothes and hang your dresses in the closet. You can go back outside and play.”
“Mom, can we have a slumber party? Can Carol, Cindy, and Debbie come ? Will you call Mrs. Wittwer? Carol is going to ask her mother.”Pam had the sound of “please…” in her voice, and hoped the answer would be yes.
Mrs. Ford said, “Well, I guess if it is alright with their mothers. We are having spaghetti for supper and there should be plenty to go around.”
Pam and Laurie cheered, ran up the stairs and changed their clothes. On the way back down they bounced down each step on their bottoms, quickly reaching the living room floor.
The phone was on a table at the other side of the living room. Pam picked up the heavy black receiver to call Carol; but some one was on the party line.
Before she could try again Carol was at the screen door in the kitchen. “Mom says I can sleep over. I brought my pajamas and my Ball and Jax. Do you want to play?”
“Yes, I’m coming. Mom said Cindy and Debbie can come, if their mom says it is OK. Go put your pajamas on the stairs.”
All three girls were bare footed and it hurt stepping across the gravel driveway. By the end of the summer they would be able to run across! They saw Cindy and Debbie crossing the road with a paper bag to carry their pajamas.
This is going to be such a cool summer! They played outside until supper time; and then went straight back outside after eating. They rolled down the hill laughing, and caught lightning bugs in their hands.
“Girls, time to come inside. I have some Popsicles for you.”
The girls rushed in the house and picked out their favorite color Popsicle. They were so cold their stomachs hurt ! They could save the sticks and make more with Kool-Aid.
Pam could hardly wait to see her dad the next morning. He was still at work. When she got up she could ask him to teach her to ride her bike. This would be a happy summer!
