Yes, you wake up each day with a new sore spot here or there, or, another new ailment that you have already heard rehearsed by the “older generation”.
Actually, it can be very amusing. It becomes a game, wondering what the surprise is for tomorrow. Well, Dr’s really can’t do much for natural aging. If you don’t want to be a zombie, don’t load on the pain pills. They will just cause some other ailment that you might well miss, if you just decide, “this is just part of life”. Just find something interesting to do. That pain in the toe could well move to another spot tomorrow!
Now, that is enough of the dark side of age. There is definitely a brighter side. Every one of us dream of when we will be retired, the fun things we will do, and really, those days CAN be more rewarding than you have dreamed, and more fulfilling than you thought!
For nearly 10 years, I sold Tupperware, after laboring in the fields with my husband for many years. God blessed me, and I was able to be a manager, and drive a Tupperware van, which was very helpful to our finances at the time. I managed to buy groceries, put gas in the van, and save back a little bit for a rainy day!
I had always yearned to do ceramics, but the expense seemed too great, as I had to pay for lessons, full price for the green ware, paint, and firing. When I retired, I was able to purchase a kiln, and this has been as fulfilling as I had thought!
I had also dreamed of learning to do oil painting, and I had done a little dabbling through the years. As a retiree, I’ve had opportunity to take classes, and lose myself in the joy of painting. I will never “arrive”, but it has been the fulfillment of a life-long dream, and I have received a few blue ribbons at the 4-County Fair. One of the most thrilling experiences has been writing my thoughts on paper, dabbling in poetry, losing myself in time, to meditate on all the Lord has carried me through, as He has been my strength and help in every time of need and discouragement.
I have truly enjoyed being able to spend a little more time with my husband, once again. We will have been married 60 years this coming August, 2009.
The very best of growing old, is more time to spend with my Lord, knowing that when my time here has passed, my Savior will take me home, and the finality of my Salvation will be culminated! Each day, I am closer to seeing Jesus than I have ever been before!
When I face that reality, the aches and pains of this life will seem so minor! My Savior will take them all away, and I’ll be forever with Him! God has never failed me yet. What a day that will be!
