I shudder to think how many times those words must have passed my lips as a child. Impatience to get to a destination seems to be a world-wide trial. I admit I have yet to outgrow this treacherous trait, although I now have different destinations in mind.
I’m eager to reach the point when I exude love, joy and peace everywhere I go, when everything I do is done with patience, kindness and gentleness, when I am known for my goodness, faithfulness and self control.
Am I there yet?
Someday every thought that flits through this frail, human mind will be true, pure and holy. My focus will be concentrated on things that are worthwhile and praiseworthy.
Am I there yet?
I covet the strength of faith that immediately releases all fears into the care of the Father, that relinquishes guilt to the foot of the cross, that hears and heeds every word spoken by the Holy Spirit.
Am I there yet?
I long to achieve the dichotomous blend of boundless wisdom and perfect humility – two goals towards which I must strive if I am to continue to grow, but which can only be granted by the hand of God.
Am I there yet?
Like a child in the car, I keep repeating the question, knowing full well what the answer is. My failures are many and my progress is slow, but my eagerness will not be satisfied until I’ve conquered the unfamiliar road that is yet before me. And on that day, when I finally leave all the trappings of this world behind, the welcoming arms of my heavenly Father will enfold me and announce my arrival.
Philippians 3:12-13 (Contemporary English Version) “I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead.”
