“Be still, and know that I am God.”
The words sear my conscience pouring from the recesses my memory. Caught in the moment, I stand at the end of the dock, feeling as though I am completely alone in the presence of the Lord; my soul exposed before the Creator who already knows my every secret. The sky on the horizon continues to change from pale blues and mauves to now include streaks of red and yellow. The loon calls out its mournful cry from within the depths of the fog.
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Alone yet surrounded by love, I survey the shoreline until it becomes indistinguishable from the air surrounding it. A fish jumping out of the water catches my attention, drawing my focus back to the lake before me. I sit on the edge of the dock, my now-bare toes dipping into the cool water; causing a cascade of ever expanding ripples across its surface.
“His mercies are new every morning.”
The sun graces the horizon with the arc of its light, beams burning through the haze; its warmth penetrating the cool damp air around me, enveloping me like strong arms. I remove my hat to feel its heat upon my face. Looking down into the water, a silhouetted reflection returns my gaze. The image though familiar is still somewhat foreign as the years are racing on; youth and vibrancy fleeting. Sickness and weariness are my new constant companions. I trace my hand over my now bald scalp.
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Looking across the quiet waters, I wonder how I will make it through. Even as I ponder this a sparrow flits through the sky, about the endless task of feeding its’ young. The trees stretch forth their new green leaves towards the heavens. Daylight steadily climbs into the sky, just as assuredly as it will end in the evening. If only we could always stay in the light, then there would be no fear.
“I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
A noise behind me catches my attention. “Mommy!”, cries my young son as he bursts into the clearing and races towards my now open arms. His youth and vibrancy seeming to rocket life into all that he passes. Today is a new day; a day to hold on to, love and enjoy. Today is a gift, and a blessing. May I use it well for His glory.
“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
The sun burns through the rest of the mist, exposing the full beauty of the once cloaked surrounding nature. I walk hand in hand, with one of the most spectacular blessings in my life.
Today is a day to live.
