I awoke with a start, that out-of-place feeling lingering from slumber. Beads of sweat were traveling my spinal track to pool onto the covers. What happened to the air?
Looking toward the fan, I could see even in the darkness that Suzanne had done it again. There she was asleep, sitting straight up, her face about six inches from the fan that was supposed to be oscillating and sharing its breath of life with Suzanne, Joyce and me. My Christian sister, hogging all the air from a fan we three had pooled resources to purchase!
How was I to know that this July was going to be the hottest on record for Toronto?
For months, Bill and I had anticipated this World Changers mission trip to Toronto from our home church in Summerville, South Carolina. Toronto, we were told, has a very mild summer and little need for air conditioning. I guess that is why Pleasant Hills High School, our home away from home, was as hot as….well as hot as it was.
Not wishing to wake the other thirty or more suffering females who shared the windowless classroom, I simply shook Joyce and let her do the deed.
“Suzanne! Don’t stop the fan from moving!” she called loudly from her bunk. Groans from all around the room were conveyed on the puff of a breeze that finally came over to my cot. If only Suzanne could be shamed into not repeating the transgression.
All day long my anger festered, infecting my spirit during face-painting, balloon-blowing, snack-giving and Bible story time.
“Did you get any mail?” Joyce asked at dinner as she tore into a small white envelope. “They have assigned each of us a mailbox downstairs. We are to use them to write notes of encouragement to one another. They gave them to the men as well.”
“I only see Bill at meals and then not all the time. Let’s see….what could I say to my darling?” It was at this very moment that I fell under satanic attack. The heat had indeed melted my defenses and caused me to remove my Christian armor.
Taking my iced tea with me, I slid down the dinner table to where Suzanne sat eating potato chips and reading a book. There I proceeded to spread my writing paper on the table and commenced writing.
“What are you writing?” Suzanne asked as I knew she would.
“I’m writing an anonymous note to Bill.” I replied, sucking her into my devilish behavior. “This is a test to really know if you can truly trust your husband. There are so many temptations out there, even in mission conferences like this one.”
“How is that going to test him? Don’t you trust Bill?”
“Oh, yes. I know Bill will pass with flying colors. It’s just great to confirm it. I am writing a note telling him just how much I admire him and how much I love to hear him sing. I am not signing it so he won’t know who sent it. Then, I’ll wait on him to tell me about the note.”
“What if he doesn’t?” Suzanne asked.
“He will. I know my husband. He’ll pass the test.”
I watched as Suzanne poured over her letter-writing for more than an hour. She couldn’t help but test Freddie. I sensed she was less sure of him. He did have a way with the ladies, you know.
My Bill came through as I knew he would. It was a beautiful thing to see. “Honey, someone put this note in my box.” he quietly spoke. “What’s with that?”
“Some of these girls are just dying to be noticed. They just don’t know you’re taken. They have good taste, though.” I offered.
I watched Suzanne and Freddie on the bus ride back home. The bus was cool with the A/C going full blast. But, Suzanne was hot. Oh yes, she was real hot.
Sharing our trip’s victories on Sunday morning brought many to the altar.
“Lord, it’s me. Here to ask forgiveness again. I really do love Suzanne and Freddie. Bless their marriage”
