"What in the world was I thinking?" Carl swooped onto the entrance ramp heading north on I-95. It was 3 a.m., and he had alot of miles to put between him and turmoil in Mt.Airy.
He was out of there, just couldn't take it anymore. This parenthood thing just wasn't all it was cut out to be. Although his wife was still just as sweet and beautiful to him, it was just too hard to feed, love and provide for one more mouth. He just didn't feel he had it to give anymore. "Where has my life gone?" his conscience selfishly derided him.
He and Sonia, had a humongus argument when he brought up the subject of aborting the fourth,...fourth,..well he couldn't bring himself to even think of the word, "ok, CHILD," his thoughts bitterly flung accusation.
"Why did Soni have to be a born again Jesus freak?" he thought angrily. Most of the time hearing "Jesus this, and Jesus that" didn't bother him much coming from her pretty lips. She was "always prayin' for him," but "This time, Jesus didn't work with him." Carl gave her the ultimatum, "It's either IT goes, or..." he hesitated, "or I go!"
Sonia, tremulously cried out, as she clutched the sleeves of his Panthers jacket, "Carl, I love you, but you can't play God with this life. I don't want to lose you, but I'm not giving our baby up!"
He reached down and turned on some Metallica that he had left in the CD player earlier that day, and sat back comfortably in the bucket seat. It was getting foggy and hard to see clearly. He turned on the defrost, and wipers. "Re-lax, re-lax, re-lax," they began to sing their lullaby.
"Never free, never be...So, I dub thee unforgiven" filtered through the fog, just as Carl jerked his head up, and saw a luminous white shape, brighter than the grayish fog that surrounded it, appearing in front of him on the highway.
SCREEEEEETCHHHH!!!....went the tires, as Carl slammed both feet on the brakes touching the floorboard, and clutching the steering wheel with a grip of steel. "Just in time to see the what? the wings? the robe? that man with a shining sword pointing at him?" evaporating through the windows like the fog as he tore through it. The sword pierced, melting through his heart. "AAAAAHHHH!!" Carl had never heard a scream like that, not from women, not even Scream one or two.
The car spun wildly before smacking into something solid, tossing his torso forward like a rag doll through the shattering glass, above the crinkling hood. Carl continued to be air-borne cutting through the fog as he rose above it.
He looked upward into the stars, and heard a voice praying. "Hey, that's Soni, Oh God please help us, please don't let it be too late!" Soni cried out, "Jesus" and Carl cried in unison, "Jesus, Jesus!"
"Never free, never be..So, I dub thee unforgivennnnnn..." and then began his descent spiraling downward, falling, falling like an echo causing a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Carl was shaking from head to toe, when he woke up in the rest area just past the Virginia line. "My Lord and Savior!, H h ow did I get here? was this a dream? Was I tripping?" he was crying, weeping. "No, it was real! I was as a dead man and now I'm alive, It was real to me as can be."
He was praying, praising and thanking the Lord as he practically skipped to the pay phone that was conveniently parked in front of his car. Carl couldn't wait to tell Soni, and ALL four baby's about his life changing car trip.
On the way, he tossed Metallica in the trash bin.
I Peter 3:1-5 (KJV) Likewise, you wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives.
