Said, “Let’s give men
Something to celebrate.”
The angel came to the virgin maid,
“You’ll bear God’s Son,
He’ll be really great.”
It was God who gave Christmas Day,
Not someone else
With a really big idea.
He sent his Son: men’s souls to save,
And at Christ’s birth
God gave Christmas day.
And now, each year, on Christmas day
We’ll remember him
For the joy he gave.
We’ll celebrate in unusual ways,
For the joy he gives
We will honor him.
These words are the verses to a Christmas song I wrote in defense of Christmas. Christmas would not be called 'Christmas' without the gift of Jesus Christ.
Christmas, for our family, was a Christian holiday, which had absolutely nothing to do with the celebrations it is so often connected with today. The whole day, every activity spoke to us of the day God gave his Only Begotten Son so that we might have eternal life. The tree spoke of the cross; the giving of that one most precious gift only God could give; the lights and decorations of the joyous occasion of his birth, and the food of a ‘tabernacles’ celebration where we came together in joyful communion and thanksgiving to the one who saved us.
This was a time for proclaiming the glad tidings with the heavenly host so that others may discover Jesus and believe to the saving of their souls.
Unfortunately religious confusion has destroyed the simplicity of our celebration, bigotry seeking to enslave us to the bondage of rites and rules. I do not; for one moment believe that the apostles of Scripture would supports such claims. One who wrests the Scriptures will use the letter to kill, and have no understanding of the liberty Jesus brings.
This Christmas let us once more, lay aside all contention and, each, in their own way thankfully celebrate the joy of Christmas: God’s gift, Jesus Christ.
