"I know Dad, but she will. I just know, in time, she will," the love struck son assured.
His father however pursued the matter further. "What about her background though," he persisted. "She comes from a tremendously dysfunctional home."
The father's words were unfortunately all too true. The young lady's parents started their marriage out great, but things rapidly deteriorated. They were kicked out of their rental home for a blatant infringement of the rules, and were left homeless and fending for themselves. Her father at least was employed, but despite his perspiring labor, they never seemed content and satisfied. Tragically, one of their children had even served time for first-degree murder. Home life indeed was dysfunctional for this young woman.
The young man, on the other hand, came from a wealthy and prestigious home where his father was well known and highly revered within the community. His charitable contributions and entrepreneurial exploits were world renown. It was obvious to all that the couple’s backgrounds were light years apart.
"Dad, I know she has a rough background," the excited groom-to-be responded, "but that doesn't have to define her future."
"That is true son, but do you really think she will change. She has a bit of a rebellious streak in her and sometimes she doesn't even act like she loves you."
Again the father spoke nothing but the truth. The young lady often pursued her own ambitions despite her future husband’s wishes. On more than one occasion the bride-to-be cancelled their dinner date, because her friends wanted her to go out shopping with them. There were also times when the father would painfully watch his son wait by the phone in anticipation of the call his fiancé said she would make, only to see the evening slip by in silence. Obviously, those experiences hurt the young man, but he amazingly forgave her. He was a model gentleman and an example of integrity and honor. People wondered what this young man ever saw in his fiancé that attracted him to her. Yet, it wasn’t so much about who she was as much as it was about who he was.
"I know that Dad, I know," the son affirmed his father’s remarks about her behavior, "but I have seen changes in her. I know she has flaws, but she's changing. In fact, right now she's sewing her own wedding gown because she wants it to look perfect. She's purchased the finest silk a person could buy and with meticulous care and concern she is crafting a dazzling raiment of purest white. Trust me Dad, you will be amazed when you see it.
"I don’t deny that her behavior has hurt me many times, but I love her despite her flaws and shortcomings. I love her Dad and that’s what matters. Even though many probably think I'm crazy, I'm willing to give my life for this woman; and when we are married you'll hardly be able to tell us apart.
“I love her Dad, and I really want your blessing on this marriage."
"And You have it my Son,” the Heavenly Father replied. “The church shall be Your bride and she will not merely be a daughter-in-law to me, but a true daughter–a part of our family."
