Topic: Illustrate the meaning of “A Bird in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush” (without using the actual phrase or literal example). (01/10/08)
The Hot African beat down on her deeply etched face. She wished she didn’t have to walk in the flaming heat but then again she knew better. The lives of her family depended on her.

She walked slowly, too tired from the chores that she had had to do before this. This included waking up early to walk about 5kilometres in search of the precious rare commodity-water. This was a daily routine and she had become accustomed to it from her early life. However, coupled with her other chores it was evident that she was not taking it all too well.

Dora, for that was her name, was like all the other women in her village. The only exception was that she had to fend for her family alone. Her husband had left to go in search in the city and she and her children had not seen him for two years now. With no means of communication to him she had no way of knowing if he was still alive and well. She could only hope and wait. Meanwhile the children had to be taken care of and her small farm could not meet all their requirements. So she had to go out in search for work elsewhere.

Her long walk ended at a local farm owned by a wealthy man in the village. He had acres of land stretching out and so he hired the local folk to work on his farm for a small fee. But with no other choice, the locals, especially women, some with babies strapped on their backs went to work there. Dora hoped that she was not too late to secure work for that day. With the sun so hot already one could easily mistake the time of the day yet it was only 9oclock in the morning.

Mercifully she arrived just before the gates were locked. She immediately embarked on what had taken her there. Hoe in hand, she bent over to begin yet another of her days chores. Only this one would set a meal on her table for a day or two. Due to the uncertainty of when she’d be able to get another chance to work here, she knew very well that she had to make the best of this chance. This knowledge set her working with renewed vigor. After all this was all she was sure of may be in a long time.

This is on topic and has good possiblities with a little proofing and tweaking, and perhaps a little more content. For example: I know you meant hot African 'sun' in your opening sentence. Good effot. Nice story. Please keep writing~

Put a space between a number and the next word (5 kilometers, 9 o'clock)
