The craftsman floats his right hand and fingers across the glass to sense their cool, smooth tops. He is mesmerized by the rainbow of colors. His hand lingers as if it is soaking in the craftsmanship that was required to make each pane of glass. With pangs of heartache though, he grabs a hammer and nail to intentionally fracture the crystal elegance. Whack! Crack! Pop! Shards of glass go flying. Why would anyone destroy these flawless windowpanes? This craftsman, however, knows what he is doing. There is a divine purpose for his actions.
Yes, the panes of beautiful glass are worthy of long stares, however they can satisfy more than one purpose. Unless the glass is shattered, it cannot be blended together for spectacular stained glass creations. How stunning the pictures will be when these multi-colored shapes and sizes are positioned into designer works of art. Stained glass windows add character to a church or other buildings yet the handiwork of these special creations will not be displayed for public viewing. They are solely for the eyes of God.
These visuals portray images of hearts that have been shattered by life events. They also depict the recreation of how those hearts can be strengthened when a soldering iron melds the delicate pieces together. Life can be tough yet it can also display radiant beauty amidst the turmoil, hurt, and pain we have all felt at some point in life. This message is clearly understood by the craftsman, for he is Jesus.
He labors, and his blood, sweat, and tears are fully invested with each crashing blow that breaks the sheet of glass. And, as if that isn’t heart breaking enough, the searing heat of the solder to fuse the brokenness together can hurt beyond belief.
Just like with nature though, after the devastation of a forest fire, in time healing occurs and life begins anew. That is the promise from our master craftsman. He can take our broken and shattered hearts and make us stronger because of the events of our lives. Inside I might feel fragile, wounded, and weak, yet with God in my heart, my strength is mightier than I can imagine.
