Do you know of any jobs that do not require one to read? Excluding the high tech ones, chemistry and science type of employment, manual jobs do not require reading. Doing general labor, but it takes toil on the physical body. When the body cannot do the job, what option does a person have who cannot read?
Consider the difficulty one has who cannot read and tries to function in their homes. Have you seen the television commercial where the little girl is reading a job application for her Dad. You need to know how to read the prescription bottles. Doing laundry, you need to be able to read the clothing labels. Cooking requires reading recipes. Cleaning house, you have to be careful and not mix the wrong cleaning products together. What about looking up a phone number or taking a phone message. For those of us who can read, these are everyday activities that we take for granted.
Thankfully, people who cannot read do not remain illiterate. There are reading programs available and no one should be left behind whom cannot read. Even those with special learning disabilities, they have as much right to be taught. As President Bush past, “The No Child Left Behind,” legislation, well, no adult should be left behind either.
To find a reading program, start with your local Social Services. Community centers often have reading classes. Schools offer reading classes. Senior centers may have reading classes. Churches may offer a reading program not only to their members, but to those in the community.
By learning to read it gives one a feeling of being in control of their lives. This open doors to better employment. Vocational or college is no longer out of one’s grasp.
Books can take you, places that you may not be able to travel to physically. You can read about far away countries in the comfort of your home. It opens doors to learning about great people in history. Any subject you have an interest in, there are books available.
Most of all, you will be able to read the Greatest Book of the Bible. Here you can learn about God’s eternal love for you. How that God sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for your sin. God desires to have a personal relationship with you. Through the cross, you can find forgiveness of sin and have eternal life by accepting Jesus’ priceless and precious gift of salvation. By reading God’s Word, you will grow stronger spiritually and become more like Jesus. In the Bible, you can find answers for problems and you can find God’s promise too.
If you cannot read and someone has read this to you, please take advantage of help that is available.
