John was guiding her down the trail of the Via DeLa Rosa, behind the mob, following Yeshua, her Son.
She thought of times past. Her baby Yeshua, so beautiful a baby He had been! A perfect little child, always so happy. In her mind she saw her Son as a little boy, running, playing and falling down. He skinned his knees. Yeshua! Yeshua, are you ok? Mother is here, there now, don’t cry my darling Son. She rocked Him close to her breast. Then in Jerusalem. He was lost! She and Joseph had searched everywhere for Him. Panic was overtaking her when they finally returned to the temple, only to find Him with the elders, discussing scriptures. He was so wise, even at twelve. So young, yet a man. They were astonished at His knowledge of the scriptures. She had been so proud of Him after getting over her panic of Him being lost.
Mary had always been afraid for Him. A sense of dread was with her since His birth; One day she would lose her Son. She didn’t know how, but she knew. She pushed those thoughts away when they entered her mind. Today she couldn’t push them away. It was happening right before her eyes and she could not bare it. He was to be crucified.
“He cannot go on! Can they not see he cannot carry the cross any longer! They have ripped His flesh to shreds and now this…Oh my God, You gave me this Child!” she screamed into the air, hot tears coursing down her face. “Why such cruelty have You bestowed upon Him? He is my Child…..Your Child. He is Your Son. Your glory. Please, I beg of You, Father….be merciful to your Son! Stop this horrible insanity.” She was sobbing wildly. “John, we must do something! Why does someone not do something to stop this?!”
“There is a man to carry His cross now, Mary. See, he is holding the Lord up.” John knew this was the will of the Father although he didn’t fully understand, yet. He embraced her to give what little comfort he could offer, drawing comfort for himself, as well.
She couldn’t see for her tears. Her legs felt like rubber as they walked on. Her feet were blocks of stone. Her heart was beating so loudly it hurt her eardrums. Her head was spinning. But they trudged on until they reached the Hill of the Skull. The crowd was still jeering, mocking her precious Son. They laid Him down upon the cross. Still, He did not resist.
Why does He allow this? She thought. Surely He can stop them. Surely God in Heaven will send all His angels down to stop this if only He ask. Yeshua…….do something……I cannot bare this.
She saw the soldiers stretch His arms out. She covered her face in John’s shoulder at the sound of the nails being hammered through His hands and His feet. With each pounding she felt His pain in her body and her heart. Still, He did not cry out…..
The cross was raised upright and lowered into the ground. She ran to Him and kissed His feet. "Oh, Yeshua, Yeshua, my Son!" She sobbed as His blood splattered her face.
“Mother, behold thy son” He said looking at John. “Son, behold thy Mother.”
Still, He was strong, as if He knew His purpose was to be crucified on this cross. She didn’t understand it, but in that moment, looking into His love-filled eyes, He gave her His peace. He gave her the comfort she needed to endure this emotional torment. In some strange way, again she was proud of Him; His strength, His Majesty, even while beaten, bloodied and hanging from the tree. Somehow, she comprehended there was a purpose to this madness and it was much more than she could realize, then. She trusted Him completely. In her soul, she knew He was doing this for her.
He was more than her Son, He was her Lord.
