As the miles went slowly by, the thought came to me that this experience was much like my life. So many circumstances had fogged my view lately. Yet, in my immediate area, the ‘today’ of my life, it was clear. Jesus was in my ‘today’, and He had promised not to leave me. His Word lit the path before me, and gave me light. I needed only to trust, that though my vision was limited, His was perfect. He was leading me home.
I continued on and the fog lifted. It was not a moment too soon for I was now in the mountains. Again, my thoughts began to wonder, and I began to rehash my concerns. Life in full time ministry was not as I expected! My husband was Director of Maintenance in a Christian Camp Ministry. The
camp had been seasonal, but with our arrival, a large building program had begun: a new home for the Director; a year round lodge and the winterization of the existing dining hall and Chapel. I was disillusioned that I was not finding the environment or the staff as ‘spiritual’ as I expected! As
I continued to drive, I noticed the darkness of the road before me. I looked toward the sky and thought of the people of Israel who had been led through the desert nights by a pillar of fire. How great it would be to have that pillar to guide me through these dark times. Even the shepherds and the wise men had a star! Surely, following that star kept them on course. Between two mountains directly ahead, I saw a brilliant star, and immediately thought of Jesus, my bright Morning Star. As long as my focus was centered on Him, and I continued moving toward Him, He would bring me on through all my concerns. And softly I heard the words of an old hymn: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus….and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”
Driving down the camp road early the next morning, I saw myself as much like the car in which I had made the trip. The windshield was dirty and blurred my view. The headlights were covered with dust and road debris. It had traveled many times up and down the road of ministry-a dirty, dusty, bumpy road. Now its vision was obstructed. The car desperately needed its optical surfaces cleansed in order to regain a clear view of what was before it. The engine, which is the heart of the car, needed to have its oil level checked and a new filling. A quiet voice prompted me: “So do you, Child. Let Me cleanse you: let Me fill your heart with the oil of My Holy Spirit. Let Me renew your vision. Allow me to apply the Balm of Gilead to your springs that you may more smoothly travel the road I have laid before you.” I bowed my head and received His provisions.
