What is abundance? Let’s get real. It depends on your definition and attitude.
Webster defines abundance as a great supply; more than sufficient quantity; Great plenty, wealth.
So what is your definition? Is it having more than enough? Or is it having far more than enough? Those can be tough questions but our attitude toward wealth, and God’s provision, says a lot about us as individuals.
In the New Testament we see that God wants us to be content with what we have, while we are work to supply our needs and build His kingdom. We are to trust Him to fill our needs.
The world would send us the message, that we should strive for wealth, as the ultimate goal; That we should do anything to gain wealth; That we should not care who gets hurt in the process. The world equates the accumulation of wealth with happiness.
God says that true happiness comes to the one who is content with what he/she has.
So what does experience tell us.
When highly successful worldly, wealthy people, (people who have great abundance) were asked, are you satisfied and happy with your great success, the resounding answer is, NO!
On the other hand Christians who use their abundance to help build the Kingdom of God, and help others, are happy, satisfied with life in general, and full of joy. It does not seem to matter to these people, whether have, barely enough to get by, or great abundance.
They just seem to operate with an attitude of gratitude. They feel that they have an abundance of blessings, and whatever they gain financially is a bonus. I think that is the key. Those who are content, with what they have been blessed with, be it money, possessions, or family and friends, don’t need great quantity to be happy and fulfilled.
If the quantity comes their way, and worldly ideas don’t grab them, these people remain content and see their abundance of riches as an opportunity to help more people.
Father God, help us to be content with what you have provided and not to strive after riches, as if that was the prize. Help us to keep our eyes on the eternal prize, and remember that we cannot take any of the wealth we gain with us when we go to meet you at the end of our journey here.
Praise God, Amen.
