Suddenly, the tears came. She sank to the floor, leaned her head against a shelf and cried. She cried for all the books she would never read, for all the stories she would never tell. “Why, God?” she screamed into the empty room. “How could you do this to me?”
“Cassie?” her husband’s voice sounded far away. “Cassie, where are you?”
She wanted to call out to him, but the words died on her lips. She sat there on the floor drowning in her misery.
Just then, Blame stepped out of the shadows. “You know Cassie; this is your own fault.” His voice was silky smooth.
“Who’s there?” Cassie moved her head from side to side trying to locate the source of the voice.
“You are such a selfish person. You weren’t writing for God at all, were you? You just enjoyed seeing your name on the cover of your books. I guess that won’t be an issue anymore, will it?”
Cassie buried her face in her hands. “No, it won’t.” She began to sob.
Self pity strode across the library floor, his shoes clicking on the hardwood as he walked. “Poor little Cassie. You were a famous writer once. Now, look at you; nothing but a pool of sadness. You didn’t really think it could last, did you?”
Torment slithered down the bookcase behind her and whispered in her ear. “What did it feel like, precious Cassie, when the world went dark?”
“Leave me alone!” Cassie yelled. “I hate you! I hate you all!”
Hate entered with a flourish. “Did I hear my name? It’s just not a party without me, you know. Yes, hate Cassie. Hate your husband for not being there sooner. Hate the doctors for not being able to fix you. Hate the 13-year-old who threw the rock.”
Blame spoke up from the corner of the room. “That’s right. After all, if the kid hadn’t been there, you would still be whole. He took your life away. Can you ever forgive him for that?”
The tears were falling, uncontrollably now, and Cassie’s sobs echoed in the empty room. “It’s not true,” she whispered, a glimmer of truth seeping into her brain.
“What did you say,” Torment seethed. “Speak up! There’s nothing wrong with your voice, is there?”
“It’s not true,” Cassie said again, though not much louder.
“You are pathetic,” Torment curled himself around her legs.
“It’s not… I didn’t…How can I…”
“Cassie, there you are!” She turned her clouded, unseeing eyes toward her husband’s voice and reached out for him.
Greg rushed to her side, scooping her up in his arms. “Honey, I was so worried about you. Don’t cry. I’m here.”
“Please help me,” she said as she leaned into his strength. “They’re speaking to me again.”
“Lord in Heaven,” Greg began. “Thank you for your faithfulness in confusing times. We don’t know how you are working in Cassie’s life right now, but we know that you are. We trust you Lord almighty. I pray against the evil that is in this room right now. Thank you Jesus that we have the power of the Holy Spirit…”
As Greg continued his prayer, an amazing light filled the room. Cassie gasped as heavenly warriors descended on her evil tormentors. Blame screamed as a sword, blazing with golden light pierced his body. He was gone in a puff of smoke.
Torment lunged at his attacker, but to no avail. Hate and Self Pity teamed up on one warrior, but the prayer was just too strong. They were reduced to nothing.
The warriors sheathed their weapons and stood in a protective circle, their backs to the couple on the floor. Cassie wiped her eyes, overwhelmed by the sight of these men. “Where does my help come from?” she mused. “Thank you Lord.”
Greg finished his prayer and the light faded. Cassie’s physical eyes would never see again, but for the first time in her life, her spiritual eyes were open.
