I never knew such agony
Could bruise my fragile heart
I never knew such bitter pain
Could tear my soul apart

I couldn't wrench my eyes away
From such an ugly scene
Or stop my mind imagining
The way things might have been

If only you had stayed with me
Your "Father's work" not done
Loved and married, built a home
And raised your own dear son.

I heard the first shout - "Crucify"
From hateful lips it sprung
To think that only days ago
"Hallelujah" they had sung

I saw the first bite of the whip
And heard its savage crack
I saw the first drops of your blood
Seeping from your back

I saw the first nail hammered in
And heard your tortured groan
The cry you lifted heavenward
"Why am I left alone?"

I saw the shadows deepen as
The day turned into night
The ground beneath was shifting
And hope was put to flight

With tears I watched you suffer
Right to the very end
I raged that you had died like this
I couldn't comprehend

I nursed your broken body
And stroked your blood soaked face
I mourned that we has spawned this deed
Our sin-stained human race

Your words came back so clearly
"The End? - not this, not here"
Your death bought life eternal
And salvation? - it draws near.
