“Why not? What if it‘s important?”
“You mean like cookies or make up or a vacuum cleaner or encyclopedias? You certainly don’t need sweets, you don't wear lipstick, at least not that I know of, you have hardwood floors and Wikipedia is free.”
“But…”
“But what, hmm? Come over here and take a peek out the window. Just look at him. Look at the way he’s dressed. He probably has fleas and smells like a goat pen. You don’t want someone like that in your home, trust me. Now look at me. Who knows better how to dress than I do, hmm?”
“Now he’s knocking.”
“So what?”
“Well, what if he wants something?”
“Oh he wants something alright, and if you open the door he’ll expect you to invite him in.”
“So?”
“So, whatever he’s going ask for you can’t afford it.”
“How do you know what I can afford or can’t? And how do you know so much about him?”
“I just do, that’s all. I’ve seen him around. He’ll start off all humble and caring then offer to do something like clean your house or get rid of your garbage, but whatever it will come with a heavy string attached to it. And believe me there will come a day when he will pull that string.”
“A- ha, you let him in, didn’t you? That’s how you know all that stuff and why you don’t want me to let him in. You must have been a real jerk to him and you’re afraid he’ll recognize you.”
“Absolutely not. That’s absurd.”
“I’m going to open the door then and let him in.”
“No! If you let him in I’ll leave out the back door. Then where will you be? All alone again that’s where.”
“So what? Go ahead and split. See if I care.”
“Oh you care. Haven’t we had some great times together? Haven’t I shown you things you never even dreamed of?”
“You’ve brought me a lot of grief, too. And speaking of deeds coming with strings attached, you’re the master of that sort of thing.”
“Don’t touch that door knob, I’m warning you. Shut that door!”
“Warning me? Hey, what are you doing? Stop that. Leave your clothes on. Why you, you lied to me all this time. I thought we were friends. I thought you liked me. Why, you’re not even a man. What in hell are you?”
“Exactly- well almost. I am from there, and hell is far better than being in a room with that guy standing in your doorway. I’m out of here.”
“Hey, where did you go? How did you do that? Dear God!”
“Yes? May I come in?”
