`Now that’s a novel idea’ I thought, but after six months of Darfurian desert life, sandstorms [called `haboob’], oceans of sand, pesky annoying sand flies, malaria, hungry people, cholera, purified well water and 110 degree days, we were game.
Our intrepid drivers drove four wheel jeeps to the banks of the Nile. Our group of westerners longed to see running water.
Someone had the idea to go water skiing [maybe it was me]. A strong rope was rigged to the tailgate and on went the first guinea pig.
No one had skis of course; shoes, speed and daring were the required equipment. The only safety rule was to stay in the
water and to avoid getting dragged on the sand beneath.
We were all fully dressed and game for a splash and a laugh, and boy did we get one. The unbelievable thrill of skiing, holding on to the rope for dear life as the jeep drove slowly on the sand bank.
My memories are of the water lapping and splashing at me,making me laugh out loud to my heart’s delight.
We all had a great day. We lunched from our `picnic’ baskets and then returned to the reality of our desert life.
