Who knew? I thought things were supposed to match. That explains why now it is the latest fad to have your shoes a totally different color than the clothes you are wearing. It makes the person stand out, that’s for sure, but years ago, one would have tried to hide the discrepancy instead of flaunting it. Oh, well. In today’s market, anything goes. I find it rather comical, though, that we humans are forever trying to re-design ourselves and our belongings to match society’s expectations.
“It’s all in the details, the accents,” Sarah continued, “a thrown pillow here, a piece of art there, and voila! You’ve changed the whole atmosphere into an illustrated story of who you are.”
Later that night, I glance up at the star-studded sky and begin wondering about God and His unmatchable creation. He is the Master Designer, and I marvel at how He did not settle for a solid black nighttime sky, but dotted it with constellations and bright stars, like sequins sewn on a velvet dress.
“Now, that’s an accent!” I think and I spend the evening pondering.
It’s not just trees with their massive trunks and climbing or hanging branches, or even their leaves. It’s the embellishment of finely-etched shredding bark, of spidery twigs dancing in the breeze like bent arthritic fingers, the feathery veins on each leaf as variegated as their individual colors.
Not content with painting all flowers with one solid bold or subtle hue, God blends their shades into patterns accented by stronger colors, much like the midnight blue suede lining of a diamond engagement ring box. It isn’t enough for Him to create a plain blue, gray, or white daytime sky, but He decorates it with fluffy white clouds, bright flashes of lightning, or rays of sunlight.
The birds of the air and fish of the sea have unique details splashed across their bodies in such remarkable, minute detail that biologists can spend years studying their distinct characteristics that, sometimes, are only necessary to take our breaths away. I consider the peacock’s gorgeous plumage or the exotic colorings of tropical fish as added features God uses for our enjoyment.
Not only are we given season and temperature changes, but Winter’s pristine white snow spreading across fields and mountain caps like white frosting on a wedding cake; Spring’s cleansing showers and dewdrops decorating blades of grass, miniature Christmas trees dripping with clear lights; Summer’s vivid colors back-dropped by clear horizons and occasional breezes fanning flushed faces as cooling as a mother’s caress across a fevered brow; Autumn’s fallen bright leaves crunching like popcorn beneath footsteps as brisk winds strip trees of their dancing dresses. All nature painted, sculpted, garnished and autographed by God’s imagination.
I think of animals of so many variations that Adam and Eve named them by their unique details and how the Creator of all life made them individual by His “accents”: a comical yellow long neck that he threw brown odd-shaped patches on; a white donkey-horse decorated with wide black stripes (perfect camouflage suits); a curly horn on that one, two humps on another and all displaying His ingenious designs.
Even in human life, there are no prototypes or clones, but as the sand of the desert and the snowflakes of the air, no two are alike in all the billions He has, and continues to, create. Each fetus uniquely characterized by singular traits combined with genes from parents in such a fashion as to make each one-of-a-kind. A dimple here, a freckle there, a bent pinkie finger, full lips or thin, big bones, little bones, and each strand of hair counted and recorded by our Maker! How awesome is that!
And, we take it all for granted, most times not even acknowledging the mystery and grandness of God’s designs. And I wish that I could spend one day a month seeing the world through the eyes of a young child to regain the wonderment of a squirrel’s antics, a rainbow’s promise, a rose’s perfume, or a bird’s song!
“Maybe then I would not strive so hard to bring attention to myself or my belongings, but to simply enjoy God’s accents in this world He has created,” I think, tripping over the new polka-dot ottoman strategically placed to enhance the accent wall’s bright color.
