She is massive - brown and beautifully furred, with a wee calf nestling beside her. Four sorrowing, imploring huge brown eyes beg me to give them space in our already overflowing home. They are cuddled together, absolutely irresistible. Snuffling into her magnificent velvety pelt, my heart makes far too many promises I cannot afford to keep. Her tag reads less than ten dollars. A true bargain, especially tempting as today is Wednesday -“Senior’s Day” at Value Village – 40% off all items. Yay! Worthy of note, yes? Yes.
Mentally, I bounce up and down – a veritable kangaroo on catnip, springing back and forth between desire, sensibility, reasoning and rationalizing. Emotionally overcome, of course I desire them. I reason that my not very patiently graying hubby would painfully explode/implode if I dared to smuggle them home. Rationale – I would craft a gorgeous animal-themed purse with her – gently splitting her back seam and snuggling a quality used handbag within her. Ostensibly a great idea, except I already have a gigantic open-mouthed snarling toothy Jaguar handbag, an adorably realistic sweet striped Zebra purse with bendable knees, a larger than life wondrously fuzzy Mama rabbit with her softest little baby, and the first one I crafted - a wide-eyed cuddly wooly Mammoth handbag dubbed “Wooly Booly”.
Take careful note – I really originally made these precious babies to sell; and then I fell in love with them all. These beauties cajoled, entreated and literally forced me to keep them. Yes they did. Yes they do! I am a kept woman. They keep ME constantly rearranging furniture and closet space. These bombastic babies are lovably large clutter bugs - magnificent cuddly dust collectors, and the one true dust bunny with her young one.
I spend hours at Value Village, searching for the absolutely perfect gift for my gal pal Kim, double mindedly “celebrating” her fiftieth birthday. Kim is a flaming redhead – think Lucille Ball - in constant motion, always chatting and never boring. I had already designed for her a lovely opal glass necklace with ocean blue beads, knowing how the colors would flatter her. Kim is lovely and I want to get her something striking. A pretty blouse in earth tones jumped out at me – and in her size! I carried that blouse for over an hour. Then I found it - a perfect pink floral cutwork lace blouse. Stunning! Note - it is considerably less expensive. Mike will be pleased. There is time to search for an exquisite red velvet dress. Sigh. Mike would not be pleased. Oh well – wearing a brilliant red 2X gown might make me look like a candy box.
Take note. Mike hates Valentine’s Day – “a man-made holiday to generate spending money we don’t have”. I, of course, love every shade of red hearts, roses, and yes – spending, and try “manfully” to tearfully agree with my lover. Like a teary-eyed spoiled little child I think longingly of lace, red velvet dresses and a blissful chocolaty Whitman’s Sampler. I love gigantic red heart cardboard boxes with way too much lace, flowers and total gaudiness!
Note. Mike will not even let me buy drastically marked down chocolates after Valentine’s Day. Pretty, fancy large emotion-wrenching holiday cards are not his forte either. Help! I love him, but I love loving him too. Must be a man-thing, yes? I am not saying he isn’t loving, kind and generous – he is, very, but he would say/agree he is cheap. Also, why support the “merchants’ holidays”? Sigh. Escaping sobs and sniffles . . .
I thought about the Mama moose this morning. I casually re-mentioned to Mike their adorableness, broadly hinting what a lovely Valentine’s Day gift it would be from him to me. Long-suffering Mike impatiently growled - again. I couldn’t exploit the romantic day – February 14 – so what could I do? Sometimes I take pictures of what pleases all my senses, and thereby have the items without the bulk. Sigh. Mike thinks I’m a mad shopaholic. I’m not – I just love beautiful funny and precious things that elicit smiles from me. Like Mike.
Eureka! Brilliant enlightenment! Take note! Turning to my lover, my long-suffering Mike - I tell him I have found his ideal perfect Valentine’s Day gift. For him I would NOT return to Value Village to buy the sweet Mama moose and her baby. He is so pleased.
And surprisingly, so am I . . .

KJV 1 Corinthians 13:11 "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
KJV Colossians 3:19 "Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them."
Note - having childhood desires when a full grown child of God, it is best that those desires be for the things of God.
The rambling dialogue suits the story though for some may prove burdensome (not me....lol)
