My husband, with five years experience behind the microphone, taught me the trade. My Top-40, Rock & Roll delivery was in line with Good Guy D-J’s. I talked to my listeners with enthusiasm, introduced records by title and artist and repeatedly gave time-temperature and weather reports. Repetition worked; even the songs I played were in regular rotation.
Have you wondered why you hear certain songs over and over? Music Directors used information from Billboard and Cash Box magazines to determine the most popular songs. In the heyday of AM Radio, stations based record play upon record sales. The Top 40 programmers put records in rotation and I played them repeatedly. Telephone requests also increased airplay.
Listeners called the radio stations, asking the Deejay on the air to play a favorite song, often wanting the announcer to dedicate it to their sweetheart. I admit, at times receiving repeated requests for a hit record day-after-day was very annoying. I will never forget one listener’s phone call. I answered the control room phone with my cheerful “KELD!”
The male voice was not easy to understand. With a sarcastic Southern drawl, he blurted something out into the telephone that I could not comprehend. Trying to be courteous, I answered the unknown radio critic; “I beg your pardon.” He quickly repeated his profanity that I had missed the first time. His crude remark does not bear repeating!
