Invited there by me;
Reigning over all its rooms,
He guards, continually.
Ever mindful of the threats
Of idols, lurking ‘round;
Showing me those impure things
That, left unchecked, abound:
Pride and envy, greed and hate,
Take root in fertile ground
Tilled and sown with thorny snares,
Prepared for those hell-bound.
Little lies are not just white,
But fester, turning black;
Growing thistle-d tentacles,
Transforming into plaque.
Double-meaning T.V. shows,
Indecent, vulgar jokes,
Worm their way in, stealthily,
Contained in clouds of smoke.
Tempting thoughts break through the door,
Forbidden habits wake;
Pushing through all old resolves,
Preceding standards break.
Selfishness parades as “rights”;
Expected, as deserved;
Creeping independence sways
My actions—unreserved.
More of me and less of Him,
Until He is no more
Ruling, living, in my heart,
For grace becomes ignored.
Jesus lives within my heart,
Invited there by me;
Reigning over all its rooms,
He guards, continually.
Daily reading from His Word
That keeps me from disgrace;
Weeding out persisting gods
That want to take His place.
Always watchful day and night,
To keep the world at bay;
Passing up the temporal
And taking time to pray.
Filling up spare time with deeds
That make Him proud of me:
Serving fellow man with love,
And living honestly.
Watch, therefore, and pray and heed
The precepts in God’s Word;
Seeking His forgivenesses,
His promises assured.
Jesus lives within my heart,
Invited there by me;
Jesus lives within my heart,
And there He’ll always be!
