But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
As Christians, we are called to spread the gospel. In a world full of stink, caused by sin, the spreading of the gospel leaves a sweet fragrance. God created the world to be perfect but when sin entered it a stench began to develop.
Ecclesiastes 10:1 (NIV)
As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.
Sin stinks! Death stinks! If you’ve ever driven by fresh road kill, you know how strong that stench is. Christ brings life and with life a sweet fragrance that overpowers the stench of death.
The Garden of Eden must have been a wonderfully fragrant place with the smell of flowers and fruit and the abundance of life. It must have been a shock to the senses for Adam and Eve to have been banished from the garden after sinning. I’m sure the first smell of death was repulsive. It would have caused them to wrinkle up their noses and become nauseated.
What a fragrant gift Christ is, who conquered death and offers us everlasting life. All we need to do is accept that gift by believing that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. We can then spread this aroma throughout the world by sharing the gospel. There is no greater fragrance.
