“I have built this beautiful swimming pool for the people who will live in this apartment complex. Now I want to build one for the personal use of the owner of the apartment complex.”
“Good idea,” the foreman said. But later that day the owner of the building got wind of the plan and had a talk with the foreman.
“Tell that man to do no such thing,” the owner said. “I have no use for my own swimming pool in my apartment complex. I have other plans for this journeyman. I am going to build a global network of talented builders who will create water projects that will sustain the world’s people. The journeyman will direct the project, but he will not build the system.”
This is the story of David who thought to repay God for His grace by building a house for God where He might dwell. God, who always spoke directly to David, made his good pleasure known through Nathan instead. At this point, David wasn’t listening to God. If he had been listening, he would have discussed his plan with God Himself instead of with Nathan.
God used this misstep to redefine David’s concept of a house and establish clearly who is in the house building business. When God laid out his plans David learned that God’s building material is people, not cedar planks.
The threefold cord Solomon speaks of addresses the foolishness of trying to go it alone and the strength we have when we bring God into the plan. We sometimes get so task focused we forget that there is a vision at the core of our purpose.
