Did you step in icky goo?
Does your hair look all affright?
Going wrong instead of right
All the things we can’t control
Seem to plot to keep a hold
To trip us up and bring us down
A self concept always unsound
The funny thing, when all is said,
Is what it takes to turn a head
To redden faces, frighten hearts
Stop us fast, rewind our starts
And many times a silly thing
That has no worth can truly sting
A careless word, a blunt remark
A bite preceded by a bark
Intimidation has no place
In dealing with the human race
Great faith should live inside our core
Where love can reap a whole lot more
But in real life that’s not what’s true
We’re more inclined to peer review
To care so much what others think
And wither when we show a chink
We posture with a quick retort
When we think we’re falling short
Victims of implied intent
And aching from embarrassment
Whenever others make mistakes
Exactly like the ones we make
Degrees of sensitivity
Should kick right in and set them free
‘Cause when we suffer that disease
The one where foot and mouth are keys
The other foot will have a shoe
Which helps us see the other’s view
But more than that I must implore
Involves a thing worth so much more
It’s not about some feelings hurt
Or acting dumb or being curt
Or consequences from life’s game
But rather why we feel no blame
When things are said about our Lord
And we don’t speak in one accord
At work or school or on a date
When controversy dangles bait
We often shy from His defense
And hide behind this world’s pretense
Not sure enough to take His part
Too much afraid of tender heart
Or lose of status in our class
Or looking foolish to the brass
Like Peter did in his denial
A time will come when we’re on trial
Charged to leave that safety fence
And stand with God, spare no expense
I pray each one of us, when asked,
Will gladly step right up, unmasked
And leave false awkwardness behind
To show the Truth…our state of mind
There is no shame in standing tough
No reason not to call our bluff
Restrain the anxious quake inside
Forget red faces and false pride
The Lord is with us ‘til the end
We must believe that He’s our Friend
And won’t forsake or hide his Grace
But put man’s Bully in his place!
