Topic: Fruit (10/10/05)
And God said, "Look! I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. (Genesis 1:29 NLT)

Humans love to try and improve God’s gifts. At my house, the grain-fruit of the fields come in the form of artisan bread, fancy breakfast cereal, granola bars, or pizza crust. The fruits of the orchard come as muffins, pies, preserves, or tiny pieces of freeze-dried fruit among the flakes of our fancy breakfast cereals. I keep the multi-colored fruits of the vine in the refrigerator disguised as purple jelly, red ketchup (yes, tomatoes are a fruit!), and yellow-gold Chardonnay. Good stuff? Sure. Better than the original? No.

Like the other fruits God provides, the fruit of faith which he planted in our hearts is sweet and simple, filled with seeds of faith, hope, and love. But we try and improve it with catechisms, creeds, dogma, denominations, ceremonies and rituals. While these things, used wisely, can help us learn about God and grow in spirit, sometimes the best way to relish the fruit of faith is to eat it plain. The next time you crave something sweet, take a single piece of fresh fruit outside. Eat it slowly; savor the taste, and notice the wonders of the world God created. As the fruit flavor blooms on your tongue, share your hopes, dreams, and fears with Him. The fruit of that conversation may be the sweetest you’ve ever known.
