“Oh, honey it’s beautiful but you shouldn’t have spent so much. My portable CD player is just fine.”
“Now, Laurel there’ll be no talk of money at Christmas. I just thought you’d like to play some of those old records you brought home from your parent’s place. Besides it’s pretty cool looking.”
“I haven’t heard some of those records in years. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard them.”
“Why don’t we try it out? Where’d you put them?”
“Up in the closet with my albums and Steve’s 45’s.”
Laurel unpacked the radio and set it on the counter and plugged it in. Her husband returned with a stack of LP’s and 45’s. “I see you brought everything.”
“Yeah. You’ve got quite the collection here. From hymns to the Bee Gees.”
“Well that’s 3 generations of music tastes.”
“Where do you get 3?”
“My parents age difference. Besides we never were sure if some of Dads records were actually his mother’s.” Laurel set the box of 45’s aside and shuffled thru the albums. “Here put this on.” Laurel handed her husband a Gaither album. “I’m pretty sure this was Mom’s.” Laurel sat amazed as after all these years the quality of sound was still good. She let the music take her back to a simpler time.
By January Christmas was cleaned up and the radio had found a permanent home in the entertainment center. Everyone was back at school and work so Laurel was left alone to write in peace. She mostly listened to the radio so she wouldn’t have to get up to change anything. One day the 45’s seemed to be calling her. She opened the box. Right there on the top was Season’s In The Sun by Terry Jacks. It was Steve’s favorite. Her brother had died 11 years prior from alcohol and drugs. She put the record on the turntable.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills and trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time.”
I’m glad Scotty didn’t see him grow up. Somewhere out there is a firefighter who remembers a happy boy riding his BMX and collecting comic books.
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I got along.
Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have
gone.”
Daddy didn’t see the effect his death had on Steve.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfish on the beach.”
Why couldn’t he be like me and reach for the Maker of the stars? Laurel wiped her tears as the record finished playing. What a waste. She took the needle off the old 45.
Now the earthly seasons were over for her family of origin. One day she would join them in that eternal season in The Son. Then the fun would really begin and their joy would be complete. Laurel let the thought comfort her and began writing.
