Just this morning I had eight email messages. Two from my favorite store, yes, I’ve even started shopping online. It’s really no different from ordering from a catalog, and much faster. My grandkids didn’t let me down today either. One note was from Sarah, filling me in on all the latest news from middle school. Interestingly the next was from her mother, filling me in on all the difficulties of raising a middle school girl. Billy wrote from college. Such a smart young man, he’s the one who helped me buy my computer and hooked up all the cords. I’d probably be tangled up in those cords right now if it wasn’t for Billy. I had two reminders from church, one about the senior potluck and another about the women’s tea.
The eighth email was the most interesting. Apparently, this poor man died in a car accident while he was working in another country. What’s even worse is that he didn’t have a will and they can’t find his family. How sad. I just wonder if his family is looking for him. This lawyer said he made a lot of money and there’s no one to give it to. He needs me to collect the money. I don’t need the money, but I could give some to the church and to my grandkids. I could even save part of it in case his family ever shows up. Most of all I would just be glad to help out. I’ll send the man my phone number and see what I can do.
Well that sure was fast. “Hello?”
“Hi Gran.”
“Oh, Billy, it’s you. I can’t talk long, I’m expecting a very important call.”
“Oh right, you’ve got the women’s tea coming up. Are you still the head of the decorating committee?”
“Well, yes, but this is much bigger than that. It seems I’ve been chosen to help manage a large sum of money for a poor man that died with no family.”
“Gran, what are you talking about?”
“I got the email this morning, very official sounding. Do you think they got my name from Pastor Mark?”
“Oh, Gran, no! Tell me you didn’t give them any information.”
“Well, just my phone number. Like I said, I’m expecting a call anytime.”
“Thank God I called. Listen, don’t talk to anyone. Don’t even answer the phone. Whatever you do, don’t give any information out, over the computer, phone or anything. It’s a scam. I’ll drive in to see you this weekend and we’ll go over some stuff.”
“But I was just trying to help.”
“I know, Gran, I know. If only everyone could be like you.”
