Hi
I’m new to this board – in fact I’m really kind of new to cycling. I think I might have gotten in over my head and I need some advice. My friends talked me into signing up for a 5 day 700 mile ride in July. I’ve never ridden more than 25 miles in a day before. Any training, equipment tips or other advice for a newbie like me? Thanks
George.

Welcome to the jungle, George. lol couldn’t resist.
Get your bike to your lbs for a tune up and a fitting. If your bike’s not fit properly it can cause injuries or will at least be really uncomfortable on longer rides. Good shorts or pants with adequate padding are a must. And build up the mileage slowly.

Hey George,
Make sure you have quality shoes, new cleats and good pedals. Comfortable, moisture wicking clothing is essential, you need to keep dry to prevent chafing. Shave your legs and use Body Glide any place you might feel friction. Buy a good helmet and sunglasses and be sure to have enough hydration.

Hi
Thanks for the input. What does lbs mean? Are there any good online training plans on how to build mileage? How do I know if my bike is fitted properly? How much hydration do I need? Why do I have to shave my legs? Sorry if I’m being a pest.

George,
LBS is your local bike shop and they should be able to help you with most of your issues. You might also check into any bike clubs in your area, they can help you with training, hydration, nutrition and other questions you may have. And you don’t have to shave your legs, but if you don’t you might be pulling hair from a scabbed roadrash on your backside if you bite the dust.

Hi
This is probably a strange question coming from a guy, but I need to know the best way to shave my legs. Is electric better than a razor? Are there any dos and don’ts? Thanks.

Welcome to the jungle, George – lol, couldn’t help myself.
IMHO, blades are better than electric. Try using a trimmer to shorten the hair before you shave. Make sure you use a moisturizing soap or good shave gel and a sharp blade.
You going to post a video? Or at least pictures?

Waxing :-) Especially a bikini wax ;-)

Georgie,
If you soak in a hot bath for a while it softens the hair and makes shaving more comfortable. Use long smooth strokes when shaving and keep the blade clean. Make sure to use some lotion afterwards to make your legs silky smooth. And if you’re waxing, make sure to post a video, I love hearing guys scream.

Thanks. Can I use my regular razor, or should I buy one meant for legs? How often will I need to shave? And I think I’ll pass on the waxing, I have a low tolerance to pain.

Any razor should do as long as you use new blades. As far as how often, that depends on how smooth you want your legs to be.

Hi,
What is the best way to stop nicks and cuts from bleeding? And how do I know if maybe I clipped an artery or something? There seems to be a lot of blood!
George.
