The police officer said that a nice lady was coming to get me soon. He said that I won’t have to go to Daddy’s house any more. The principal said that I might have to go to a different school because I am going to live with a foster family. I’m a little bit scared because I don’t know a foster family, but the principal said they will take good care of me.
I will miss my kitty. She sleeps with me when I’m afraid, and I don’t think Daddy will take care of her. He doesn’t like Magpie. That’s my cat’s name. I call her that because that’s what Mommy used to call me. I was her Little Magpie. That was before Mommy went away. Now I don’t get to see her any more.
Mommy and I used to play at the park sometimes. She pushed me on the merry-go-round and I laughed and laughed. That’s when Mommy smiled. She had a pretty smile, but her eyes were always sad. One day I asked her why she was sad. She said that I was too little to understand, but her job was very hard. Mommy worked at night, but I don’t know where. Sometimes the babysitter couldn’t come. Then Mommy worked at home. She made a bed for me on the couch because she said her client was coming. When her clients came, I had to stay out of the room. I don’t know what a client is, but I think it’s a man because no women ever came. Some of them were nice and gave me candy, but one time a really bad man came, and he hurt Mommy. She had to go to the hospital. I was very scared. After that, she went away and I had to go live with my Daddy. Daddy said Mommy did a bad, bad thing, so she’s at a correctional institute, and that’s why I had to go live with him. He said I was a brat, and I had to earn my keep. That’s when he started hurting me. I don’t want to live with him any more.
I don’t like my Daddy because he’s mean to me. Do you think God is mad at me? One time I went to church with my babysitter because Mommy didn’t come home. The preacher said that God wants us to love others, but how can I love my Daddy when he hurts me?
Thank you teacher for always being nice to me. You never yell at me when I do not do my homework. You always smile at me, and you give me a hug when I cry. I like how you brush my hair in the morning, and give me clean clothes to wear when I come to school. I know you love me teacher, and I will always love you too. I will not forget you teacher. I hope you will always remember me.
Love,
Maggie

I had questions about the age of the letter-writer, who has a very young voice. Could such a young child really write such a lengthy letter?
Always thankful for entries that portray teachers in a positive light--thank you so much!
