It is tasteless, insipid and dead—
The drink of last choice to palates most grand,
Mostly spurned by stomachs well fed;
But flavours for pleasure their taste buds demand—
‘Let us drink and be merry’, they’ve said.
To him who is parched, dog-thirsty and dry,
In the blaze of the hot desert sun,
With strength ebbing low and certain to die,
His heart giving out, his hope all undone,
Cool water beats all that money can buy,
Is life from the dead to this needy one.
“Ho, Come to the waters; there’s endless supply—
It’s life-giving, refreshing and free;
Streams in the desert fed from on high
You can drink from them copiously—
So come and partake for why should you die?
If you’re thirsty for life, come to Me.”
He spoke of The Spirit all would receive,
Who would come to empower His own—
A wellspring of life in all who believe
Who gives foretaste of life at the Throne—
For Christ, by His Spirit will never leave
‘Till that day when He leads us all home.
That day we will see The Lord face to face;
What a wonderful, wonderful sight!
Through life in the Spirit He gives us taste—
Pure refreshment of holy delight—
For all who’ve availed of Christ’s saving grace,
Who’ve responded to Jesus’ invite.
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Jn. 7.37—39 NKJV.
