Thank You for the gift You have given me, the ability to craft images and thoughts with words. These words can bring laughter and joy. They can touch hearts and shine hope through sorrow, friendship through loneliness, conviction through sin. You know the great power of words for You have spoken to our hearts through your Bible, a book infused with Your life and love.
Yet, Lord, I fear sometimes that I don’t use this gift as you wish me to. At best, I use it for common purposes – in idle chatter to a friend or to write a letter of rebuke. At worst I use it selfishly to gain glory for myself, as opposed to glory for your Name.
I think of Moses’ staff, a common stick of wood. Had he not allowed You to use him and work through it, it would have remained only that. Yet, in Your hands, it devoured evil, parted a sea and brought forth a stream of water to quench thirst.
Use my writing to consume evil, to make a way forward and to bring people to the banks of Your river of life.
I think of David’s sling, the toy of a child. Had he not allowed You to guide his hand and trusted You for victory, he would not have defeated a giant, put to chase an enemy and lifted up Your Name throughout the nations.
Use my writing to defeat overwhelming issues, to chase away those that seek to destroy Your people, and to lift up your Name.
I think of the boy with a meagre meal of bread and fish. Had he not placed them in Your Son’s hands, he would never have seen You feed thousands, bringing healing and hope, and drawing lives into Your kingdom.
Use my writing to feed people, to bring wholeness and hope and to draw others into Your kingdom.
Lord, use my whole life, including this gift as You see fit. To reach a nation or a single heart, as You will it.
I know that this will require change. No longer can I write for the acclaim of others. Cause me to care more about the praise that flows from Your heart than the praise that pours from people’s lips.
I know that it will require me to draw constantly closer to You. To seek You always in prayer and in Your Word, so that the words I write are true, guided by You and filled with your wisdom. Give me a heart that yearns for You Lord.
Anoint me and my gift, as you anointed Moses and his staff, David and his sling, the boy and his meal.
Each day proclaim the good news that He saves.
Publish his glorious deeds among the nations,
Tell everyone about the amazing things He does.*
May my life and gift bless Your Name, Lord. May they always proclaim your saving grace and publish your glorious deeds among the nations.
Amen
