“Adam, get up.” The Voice commanded. The fragrance intensified in the air, covering him like a blanket. Adam arose to his feet, a little odd sensation fluttered in his stomach. He could see the birds sitting in the trees overhead like a court full of spectators, fluttering their wings like tiny fans. He had the creeping feeling that something happened and he had missed it.
“I feel so strange. Why is that, Lord?” Adam remarked to the Voice. A sound of chuckle emitted from the cloud.
“Adam.” The Voice whispered in love. “I have not forgotten you. I know the desire of your heart.”
Adam waited in silence as he peered into the cloud where his Lord stood. Desire? Of my heart? He wondered what the Lord had in mind for him. The Shekinah glory fluttered like bursts of golden rays through a prism of a sparkling rainbow. Adam could make out the contours of the Lord’s face, the hands and the feet. An itch spread across his side and he glanced to his stomach. Why am I scratching? He whispered to himself, his fingers raked over the ticklish area.
“Pay attention!” Adam felt the Lord nudge his soul. “Remember the animals that came one by one for you to give them their special names?”
“I did. None of them looked like me. All walk on their hind legs or fly or swim. I have just two legs. Two arms. I don’t even have a tail!”
“Yes, that is true. None of them were created to be your helpmate. I wanted you to understand the difference between them and you. You were to be the master as I have decreed you to be, over the earth and the creatures in it.”
“I know, Lord. I remember.”
“The reason why you are scratching your side is because I removed the extra rib while you slept. I have a pleasant surprise for you, Adam. Your very own that I have given to you. I have created Woman.”
“What is a Woman?” Adam inquired with a quizzical bent of his eyebrows.
Wait? The Lord did what? He took a rib out of me when I was asleep? Am I dreaming again, Lord?
The Lord let out a deep laugh that Adam knew was powerful to shake the stars to fall to the ground. He felt sheepish in the Presence.
Adam’s eyes widened as a figure approached him from the cloud where the Lord stood. He shook his head to ascertain he wasn’t seeing things. His heart began to throb. The figure was like him and yet unlike him. This one had a body made out of soft curves and the skin seemed to reflect a glow like sunshine and the wind wrapped up in it. A cascade of dark hair rippled down the back. Adam gulped. He glanced to the Lord and then back to the figure.
“This is Woman. Take care of her well. Teach her all that I have spoken to you. She will help you. She will care for you. She is a treasure I have created and given to you, a special blessing. Love her as I have loved you.”
The Woman smiled a tremulous grin. Her eyes were like a mix of liquid sunlight and starlight all in one tentative glance. A wave of emotion flowed over him at the sight of her. Eve. He recognized the overwhelming emotion mirrored in her beautiful face. Flesh of my flesh. Lord, this is incredible! Bone of my bone.
“Eve.” Adam proclaimed the name for Woman. Life. She was life to him. Adam sensed the Lord approved his choice.
“You a-are-” Eve interrupted with a lift of her finger to his lips, “Shh.”
She leaned forward and kissed him. In that moment, he knew he had already given more than just a rib- she had his heart. Her soul cried to his and his soul replied in turn. Forever.
