His eyes slowly fluttered open and with a wide yawn he announced his awakening. After taking a moment to assess his surroundings, Charlie strolled across the room, humming like a finely tuned Harley, and hopped onto the Ben's lap.
Working with abandon through a glitch in a program he had newly created, Ben was tuned-in to his laptop and tuned-out to the world around him. Often times, it was noted that Ben could carry on an entire conversation while in the trenches of programming syntax and later have no memory of such conversation. He was devoted and impassioned with his career of choice.
Charlie was the one exception to that rule. Charlie entered Ben's life, a sweet and fuzzy kitten with a cherub face that could melt even the frostiest demeanor. From his sweet and wispy kitty 'mew' to his overly-mature purring aptitude, Charlie's desire to love and be loved was bar-none.
Therefore, upon hopping upon Ben's lap to offer up a little bit of God's best, he found his efforts to be delightfully received.
Ben ceased the rhythmic tapping that had been reverberating throughout the office for the hour prior and looked down to the wide brown eyes with golden flecks at their center.
"Hello there, Charlie. How's Charlie today?" He questioned, expecting no verbal response. A smile spread across Ben's face that radiated loving pleasure. He scratched the scruff of Charlie's head and behind his ears. Charlie settled in to enjoy the pleasurable rub down. Ben reached underneath Charlie's tiny jaw and began stroking his chin and neck. Charlie's eyes rolled back in his head with ecstasy and his mouth hung open ever-so-slightly while relishing his luxurious spa-like massage. Now and then Charlie would return his gratitude with some playful pawing and gentle nibbling of Ben's knuckles.
After exchanging this light banter for a time, Charlie, having his fill, quietly strolled to the sidearm and climbed to the top of the chair where he could lay snugly in the hollow of Ben's neck. Lying down, he took a moment to clean any spots from his face and head that had been soiled by recent human contact and then quietly lay down for a well deserved nap.
Each, having allowed their cups to be slightly refilled during a dreary winter day, felt a small sense of satisfaction as they returned to their prior activities. The sun momentarily peaked out from behind a menacing cloud. A small speck, but none-the-less, a bright twinkle of hope, warmed their chilly hearts.
