Walking through the Gentile courts, the Teacher stopped to see
The busyness of temple life and all it seemed to be.
One would think a lot of good was being done that day,
As people came expectantly from many miles away.
Money-changers set up stands helping those from out-of-town,
"Exchange your money here, my dear, I'll never let you down."
A tax of a half-shekel was a must to enter in,
To the temple where there was covering for one's sin.
The doves and other animals used for such a plight,
Were there for all to buy, everything looked quite right.
Walking through the Gentile courts, the Teacher stopped to see
A Gentile man kneeling and praying fervently.
The only place for him to pray was covered in some dung,
From the sacrificial animals whose death march had begun.
"Who do you think you are?" a priest sneered walking away,
Others mocked, others laughed while the Gentile tried to pray.
About that time a loud argument arose from an inspector's stall,
"My dove can't be blemished, I just bought it down the hall."
"I'm afraid it is so for this imperfect dove will never do,
Country simpleton, you've been duped, you are such a fool."
Walking through the Gentile courts, the Teacher stopped to see
All the horrors of the Temple His Father never meant for it to be.
All of a sudden, the anger of the Father arose within the Son,
Tables and benches went flying, people began to run.
"My Father's house will be called a house of prayer this day,
No longer a den for thieves, it will be a sacred place to pray."
A hush fell over the crowd, they were amazed at His teaching,
As a result, this story of Jesus was quite far-reaching.
Lord, examine the courts of my heart where Your Spirit loves to be,
Remove from me wrong motives and every greedy impurity.
May this temple of Your Spirit be a house of prayer today,
Dedicated to you, my Lord, may it be a sacred place to pray.
