At her knees, I sat for stories told,
‘bout foolish people who’d weary grown
Of their Great King Who chose them for His own;
Loved, cared, fed them from Heaven unfold.
I lifted my eyes to her face that shined
At the kind, gentle Love she’d known so well.
As she broke in tears when people whined,
Dared, clamoured for king, like no heathen quell.
At her knees, the awesome Word oft’n read.
One was ‘bout Saul, sat on a throne, crowned;
was told to obey, Yahweh’s voice to heed.
Saul harkened not, his conquests Yahweh frowned.
I gazed at her, eyes shut in sheer dismay.
Said, “Amalek, Israel’s enemy yonder,
‘gainst God on High, they’ll perish away.”
“ Saul,” God decreed, “All the land, go plunder!
Spare no mercy 'pon ev’ry thing alive.”
Saul of valour, clothed in iron-clad.
Thousands footmen, laid wait in the valley-
Seized Amalek whose doom bellowed mad.
Saul must spare no grace, to strike them ill
with all his might; mercy, he must deny .
“Huh? Did he do it? As bade to kill?”
“Son, Saul’s no man of God, I’ll tell you why.”
Mother, stern, scorned at the sin of Saul.
Saddened, sobered eyes, to me she spoke,
“Son, Saul cared not obey what he was told;
He saved wicked Agag, spared him the sword.
The best of sheep, oxen, lambs, and fatlings
Belonged to Agag, Saul favoured than God.
Saul resolved to offer as peace of’rings
To God; a tribute for duty he bragged.”
Saul faded as leaf withers and grass dies.
Crowned, throned, rebelled, but soon lost it all.
God’s voice, he heeded not, Saul wrought lies.
"Son, you ought to know. Pride goes before a fall."
"While God permits you knowledge of Truth;
While time has not seized upon me, hear.
Listen caref’lly in the strength of your youth;
Eschew evil, obey Him with holy fear.”
“Son, if years lead your path, fear God, love Him.
From Saviour’s commands, wander not, follow Him.
Never regret later in life-- keep faith.
Gird up, be strong, sound, and seek His way.”
...
Now I’m father, forty-eight years past, I see
Loving, kind admonitions at her knee.
This one thing I know, blessed Spirit lead
Teach my young ‘uns, in the Word must live.

Some of the phrases and word constructions seemed a bit rough or contrived to me. Could be smoothed out a bit, perhaps?
Loved the last stanza, with the legacy being passed on to the next generation.
