Our dirt-brown field
Has shared its yield
Of crops mature and harvested
And now looks dead
But hope endures
And bare earth lures
My feet to walk where next spring’s hoe
Will follow rows
It bids me come
Despite the hum
Of wind that whips the barren trees
Their limbs to freeze
The sun grows low
I start to go
For a short walk before it drops
And daylight stops
Corn’s camel stubs
Poke up and rub
My feet that tromp the auburn dirt
I zip my shirt
The wind is cold
But I feel bold
And pledge to walk from here to there
Myself I dare
And so I kick
A russet stick
And copper pebbles one by one
This just for fun
Beside brown hedge
I walk the edge
And look around at umber earth
That gave corn birth
Green grew galore
Just weeks before
But then the frost chased jade away
Brown came to stay
I breathe sharp air
Then stop and stare
To take in autumn’s brown-tone sights
Before the night
To dawdle here
Means sighting deer
With sleek fur coats of bole and buff
Rugged and tough
Surely they know
I’m not a foe
But just a friend who loves to see
Them running free
A doe of taupe
Peeks out to scope
And sees me waiting patiently
Then turns to flee
Her flight is swift
After she whiffs
My scent and leaps with giant bounds
From absent hounds
A bunny leaps
And burrows deep
In grasses sure to camouflage
With tan hodge-podge
Off to one side
Small branches hide
A fledgling oak so strong and straight
Awaiting fate
Much larger trees
Wave in the breeze
Their limbs like skeletons of brown
No leafy crown
A bird nest sways
I fix my gaze
On tiny twigs and brown horsehair
From our old mare
The twilight falls
With chocolate walls
I turn and scurry toward the house
Like a quick mouse
Coffee I drip
And slowly sip
The dark roast brew from giant mug
I’m warm and snug
This autumn day
Is lost in haze
As western sky’s burnt umber glows
It’s time to doze
